From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a new, STANDALONE novel…
No one but me knew why I was actually in the California desert that day.
Nestled deep within the desolate, rocky area was a recording studio.
When a door suddenly opened, a man mistook me for someone he was supposed to be interviewing for a job.
The next thing I knew, I was whisked inside.
The position? An assistant on the upcoming tour for one of America’s most famous rock bands.
Pretty exciting opportunity for a twenty-two-year-old, just out of college.
Not surprisingly, I bombed the interview.
When I ended up mistakenly walking into the men’s room on my way out, I struck up a conversation with a stranger—not realizing it was the lead singer, Tristan Daltrey.
He seemed to like the fact that I had no idea who he was, that I saw him as a normal person.
That night, I got a call offering me the job.
So began my complicated story with Tristan.
Millions of women loved him.
Yet for some reason, after the shows, he only wanted to hang out with me.
Late-night talks. Casual dinners in his hotel room.
I wasn’t supposed to be fraternizing with the band’s frontman.
Despite our fifteen-year age difference, Tristan and I had a connection.
But I had a secret.
One that would eventually lead to my leaving the tour.
And one that would lead Tristan and the band straight to the small town where I came from.
I was not quite sure where this book was going to take me and it was full of secrets and surprises.
Emily Applewood finds herself swept up into a temporary job as a roadie for the band Delirious Jones and catches the eye of the lead singer Tristan Daltrey. He finds ways to get to see and spend time with her. There is friendship, opening up, flirting, and some passionate moments. But there are also secrets, roadblocks, and situations working against them.
Tristan has also been struggling with something and Emily understands and supports him. She also sees him for the man he is and not the rockstar. But the secrets she is keeping are big ones.
They try to resist, retreat, avoid, deny, but keep finding themselves in each other's orbit. And as these secrets come to light they change everything. It is a catalyst for a new direction in Tristan's life and he wants her along to help him. They both have to face past pain, self-worth issues, and unresolved feelings. This is an age gap (22 and 38), slow burn, close proximity, rockstar and every girl love story that turns into an emotional journey of discovery and healing.
It is an original story and went places I did not expect. The layers are peeled back and really surprised me and hurt my heart. I fell for Tristan as he began to feel seen and found new purpose and inspiration and made the best of a difficult situation. Some parts were angsty, challenging, or frustrating, but it was all part of their journey to where they wanted to be but were afraid of hoping for. There is sadness but there is also hope and healing.
I am interested in his bandmates Atticus and Ronan and am glad we will get stories about them.

Emily didn’t go to the recording studio in the desert looking for a job, but left with a temporary job working with Delirious Jones, a wildly popular band. Emily is not a fan of the band, as evidenced by the interaction she had in the bathroom with a man who turned out to be the lead singer. She is looking for something and isn’t sure what direction she wants her career and life to head, so a few months on the road with a band seems like a good place to do some thinking.
Tristan Daltrey is used to being recognized and fawned over by fans and women alike. He is intrigued when he meets Emily and she treats him like a regular guy. She is way to young for him, though they develop a friendship on the road as she continues to treat him like a regular guy.
This is a slow burn that takes place in on tour: buses, random hotels, restaurants, and backstage moments take up the majority of their interactions. I had a hard time falling in love with the main characters at first, whether it was the age gap or other aspects of their relationship, I am not sure, but by the end I was invested in their success. These two built a friendship with crackling chemistry. But as Emily knew this was temporary and he had women throwing themselves at him often, she was reluctant to start anything at first. There were twists and turns to this story that I did not expect at all, and that had me reconsidering my earlier reticence to love the characters. In hindsight I loved the journey that brought them to where they were.
By the end I loved all these characters and the journey they were on. I particularly loved the camaraderie between the bandmates and would love to see stories about Atticus and Ronan in the future!
