Book one in the CARELESS WHISPERS series. This is a standalone spin-off of the INSIDE OUT series (soon to be a TV show) that follows Ella Ferguson, Sara McMillan's best friend.

Ella Ferguson awakes alone in Italy, unsure of who she is, and a gorgeous man has claimed her as his own. He’s tall, dark, and sexy, with money and power, the kind of man who makes a girl want to be possessed. And he does possess her, whispering wicked wonderful promises to her, stealing her trust and her heart. Soon though, the past finds her, yanking her from a cocoon of passion and safety. Everything is not how it seems. The truth will shatter her world, but it can set her free, if it doesn't destroy her first

Read an excerpt of Denial HERE

Before I start my review, I wanted to just give a quick FYI. Denial does end in a cliffy. And while it isn’t one of those cliffs that will leave you wanting to throttle the author or throw your kindle, it is a cliffy nevertheless. The Careless Whisper series consists of three books; therefore, I am assuming book two will also end in one as well. If you don’t do cliffhangers, it might be best to wait until the series is complete.

Can I just say, I FLOVED this couple! Completely and utterly adored Ella and Kayden. I seriously can’t wait for you to meet them.

Let me introduce you to the principle players. Ella's our resident "damsel in distress." Her identity is lost to her; the only thing she can remember is waking up in the hospital to one hell of a beautiful and mysterious man. Everything past that, is gone. Kayden’s our, drop dead gorgeous, knight in shining armor. He came upon Ella after she was beaten and left for dead. Ella’s a stranger to him, one he should be able to walk away from, yet his honor and intrigue towards her won’t allow him to. Instead, he’s vowed to defend and protect her. In the meantime, I say let the battle of wills begin. Ella's bound and determined to solve the mystery of who she is, while slowly falling for the one man she probably shouldn't, and Kayden's bound and determined to keep her safe, while guarding his heart by staying aloof.

These enigmatic and poignant protagonists hooked me from the start, keeping me glued right till the end. And while I delighted in them both, my love for Ella was definitely a bit more than my love for Kayden. I couldn’t help but fall hard for our girl. To be honest, I’m actually kind of girl crushing. Ella’s a kick ass heroine. One who didn’t act like the typical “damsel in distress.” I absolutely adored the perfectly balanced mix of strength, softness, and sass. When push came to shove, Ella totally didn’t need to rely completely on Kayden’s protection. Our girl was pretty bad ass in that department as well. The attack and her memory loss may have left her a victim but Ella most certainly wasn't one. She was all about survival.

Kayden, well, Kayden was definitely mysterious. This may have been my favorite characteristic about him. I loved that there was something more underneath the surface. Everything about this man screamed intrigue with a hint of dangerous. I’d almost venture to say he wasn't quite your typical hero. No, in my opinion, he was a tad bit more. His unique mix of dominance, charm, defender, and edge was one hell of an allure. No wonder Ella had a hard time resisting him.

What captured my attention the most though was the fact these two were filled to the brim with secrets that will leave you chomping at the bit to get to the bottom of it all. With each tease of Ella’s memory, my mind was spinning with curiosity, wanting answers to the same questions she did. Each elude to her past felt like a new puzzle piece meant to send the story down a twisty road. Forget thinking you know exactly where these two are headed. Being a newbie to this series, I was even more tempted to read the connecting series to see if I could indeed piece together those missing pieces to the puzzle. And as Ella’s identity started to slowly unravel my desire to know just exactly who Kayden was amplified. The enigma surrounding him was at an all time high. Kayden was a tough nut to crack and it was obvious that there was more to him than meets the eye.

I am anxious for May 31st to get here. I need to get my hands on Demand, the second book in this series. Ugh, I am soooo not a cliffy girl! Why, oh why, do I do this to myself?!

Orange Is the New Black meets Jennifer Probst’s New York Times bestselling Marriage to a Billionaire trilogy, featuring a strong-minded prison tutor who discovers that her sexy bad-boy student is far more than he appears to be.

Haunted by nightmares of her father’s street murder fifteen years ago, Kat Lane decides to face her fears and uphold his legacy of helping others by teaching inmates at a New York prison. There she meets arrogant Wesley Carter, who’s as handsome as he is dangerous, as mysterious as he is quick-witted, and with a reputation that ensures people will keep their distance.

As teacher and student, Kat and Carter are forced to leave their animosities at the door and learn that one should never judge a book by its cover. As Carter’s barriers begin to crumble, Kat realizes there’s much more to her angry student than she thought, leaving them to face a new, perilous obstacle: their undeniable attraction to one another.

When Carter is released and Kat continues to tutor him on the outside, the obstacles mount. Can they fight the odds to make their relationship work? Will Kat’s family and friends ever accept her being with someone of his background? And will Kat’s discovery of Carter’s role on the night her father died force them apart forever...or unite them?

Q&A With A Pound of Flesh Author Sophie Jackson!
The student/teacher trope is not normally my thing; however, the moment I read the synopsis for Pound of Flesh, I was intrigued and wicked excited to get my hands on something different. I’d say I sat 50/50 on the uniqueness of this book. Some parts were definitely uncommon and other parts not so much. I liked Pound of Flesh, but I wasn’t as in love with it as I hoped to be.

The thing is I enjoyed the first half of the book much better than the last half. Mainly due to the spark Kat and Carter threw off during their altercations. I really loved their spitfire personalities in those scenes. Once Cater leaves the prison and Kat starts to tutor him outside of that atmosphere, I felt as though both characters could be lackluster and cheesy at times.

While I thought after prison Carter was a pure sweetheart, I actually missed the cocky Carter. That Carter set my heart racing. The “new” Carter just left me with a comfy feeling, no longer on the edge of my seat waiting to experience more of his intensity. Which is a shame since I totally dig me a good bad boy and Wes Carter had all the right ingredients to make an amazing bad boy gone good, while still holding on to the edginess of his allure.

I liked Kat and often felt bad for her with the crap she had to take from her mother and best friend. They were complete and utter bitches!! Oh my gosh, I could not take any more of their nastiness and judgments thrown Carter’s way. I could understand it at the beginning while Carter was still in prison, but this lasted the entire book and was quite annoying to me. I applauded Kat for not taking their damn crap and putting them both in their place. If it had been me, I would have been dishing out some major smack down.

Here is where my primary issues came in, the author had some great plot ideas when it came to Wes and Kat; however, those ideas never really went anywhere, falling rather flat in execution. I was disappointed with the forbidden/illicit aspect to their relationship and how huge the repercussions would be if they were caught. Jackson totally let this slip to the wayside. By letting this tad bit dangle in the wind, I felt as though it took away from the complete taboo intention. In addition, the story line between Carter and his cousin Austin was also left dangling in the wind. The author could have taken this plot line and run so many amazing places with it, yet it too fell flat in execution. With as much as Austin was an ass, it was surprising to see this man just lay down with his tail between his legs. Totally didn’t fit the personality or character villain Jackson was going for.

Overall, Pound of Flesh was a decently written book that held great potential for becoming something special. Unfortunately, that potential went unrealized due to plot lines that were never followed through.

Nuts (Hudson Valley #1)

Goodreads

Amazon | B&N | iTunes | Kobo
Expected October 20, 2015

From New York Times bestselling author Alice Clayton, the first in a brand-new romance series telling the humorously sexy tale of Roxie, a private chef who gets a taste of love—but is it to stay, or to go?

After losing almost all of her clients in one fell swoop following an accident involving whipped cream, private chef to Hollywood’s elite Roxie Callahan gets a call from her flighty mother, saying she’s needed home in upstate New York to run the family diner. Once she's back in the Hudson Valley, local organic farmer Leo delivers Roxie a lovely bunch of walnuts, and soon sparks—and clothing—begin to fly. Leo believes that everything worth doing is worth doing slowly…and how! But will Roxie stay upstate, or will the lure of West Coast redemption tempt her back to Tinseltown?

(Also can be viewed on Alice's site HERE)
The boys were jumping and shouting as he held what looked like patches over them, doling them out and calling the kids by name. As I got closer, I could hear him laughing along with the kids.

“I hear you, Owen; you’ll get your activity patch too—don’t worry. Who else? Here you go, Jeffrey, you earned it when you picked the biggest eggplant we’ve had yet this year! Who else? Let’s see . . . oh boy, we can’t forget Matthew—here you go, buddy. You guys are the best Webelos around.”

His smile really was contagious, and I found myself grinning as I crossed the gravel, admiring his high cheekbones, the curve of his lower lip as he laughed, and the green eyes that, when fixed on mine, turned my belly all butterflies.

And that beard. What constituted a hipster beard? Is it the length? The shape? The proximity to flannel and Mumford? We were within twenty yards of an heirloom tomato; does that count as hipster cred?

I hadn’t been a fan of facial hair beyond two-day sexy scruff, yet Leo was sporting an actual beard and I liked it. I more than liked it, I wanted to touch it. Was it scratchy? Soft? Coarse? Touch it, hell—I’d like to look down and see it, and his face, between my thighs. With significantly less clothing than in our previous encounters.

As my breathing speeded up, another image popped into my brain: sweaty, naked parts and grasping, clutching hands. Whew, it seemed hot out! Christ, the farmer was now affecting me physically. Which was good— I wanted physical. I needed physical. So when I saw him pick up a bottleneck squash that mimicked something very specific in my mind, I covered my moan with a cough.

“You okay?” he asked as I reached him.

“Yeah. Why?” I said, tugging at my T-shirt. Air, please—just a little air.

“Sounded like you were—”

“Just clearing my throat,” I said, and quickly changed the topic. “I made the black walnut cake, with cream cheese butter- cream frosting.” I thrust the white box into his hands.

“Wow, you really made me cake?” he asked, looking quite pleased.

“Well, I made it for the diner; the rest got sold today.”

“Is it good?” he asked.

I grinned. “It’s fucking great.”

Leo closed his eyes and shook his head, and I realized I’d just F-bombed a Boy Scout troop.
I had a strong hate/love relationship with Nuts and everything between its pages. I, honestly, wasn’t sure if this would end up on my DNF list. 90% of my issues were in the wordiness and over detailing. I love the Farmer’s Market as much as the next person, but if I never hear about farming, animal poo, or endless varieties of food again it won’t be too soon. For the first 45% or so, Nuts was bogged down with vivid and exhausting descriptions of farming, farm land, and cooking, as well as the scenery. In all honesty, by the time I reached the second half of book, the only scenery I wanted animated description on was Leo.

Which, luckily, came none too soon. Once everything moved past all the farming and food talk, the book picked up its pace, delivering what I have come to love from Ms. Clayton. Leo and Roxie’s relationship finally began to demand front and center control over the whole show. And let’s just say, it's delicious and dominates the rest of the book. That second half was exactly what I look for when I sit down with one of Alice’s books.

If I had had this Roxie and Leo straight from the beginning, intermingled with the farming and cooking, this would have been a definite five star read. I really enjoyed the connection and chemistry between our protagonists. Ms. Clayton provided the perfect balance of the flirting, sexual tension, and tongue in cheek humor that left me wildly entertained. I even found Roxie’s awkwardness endearing. Plus, Nuts had that it factor I have been looking for in my books lately—low angst and minimal complications. I love me a good light-hearted and charming read.

Around 45%, the book became quite engaging and sexy as hell. I began to devour the pages, eating up everything Roxie and Leo (well mostly Leo... *fans self*). However, I don't know if I will carry on with series. Although, I did thoroughly enjoy all the characters. Chad and Logan were so much fun. Roxie's besties were intriguing. And my interest is definitely piqued when it comes to a certain tatted and broody farmer, Oliver. Its just that I don’t think I can take anymore technical talk, no matter how HOT the heroes are.

I've been coloring with my boys' this past week and having a blast. I totally forgot how fun and relaxing coloring could be. It’s also a great outlet for creativity. At first, I was unsure about the whole coloring book for grownup thing, but the moment I saw the book and flipped through the pages, I became really excited about the idea of coloring with my boys. I haven’t tried it yet as a stress reliever; therefore, I can’t really comment on whether it works for that purpose. I can attest to the fact that it kept my teenager’s attention for at least a good hour, if not longer. I mention this because he is on the Spectrum and has ADD and usually the only thing that holds him for any long amounts of times is gaming.

Since this was a family affair, I thought it would also be fun to let the boys also post what they thought. So without further ado, here are their "reviews"...

Ryan (16):

“The book was fun with lots of detail to color in. It had interesting pictures, so I wasn’t bored.”

Jake (12):

“The birds were cool and when completed looked very colorful. There were many fun pages to choose from.”

Evan (11):

“When I was bored it gave me something fun to do. There were lots of cool pictures to choose from. And when finished, it looked awesome.”

Tammy:

With so many choices out there, I wasn't quite sure what to color with. I took to Pinterest and Google. The suggestions were overwhelming to say the least. Before it could do my mind in, I decided to just go as cheap as possible in case this wasn't something I enjoyed doing. - 72 count Cra-Z-Art Colored Pencils - I thought these worked pretty good. As time goes on, if I continue to enjoy coloring, I might upgrade to better quality pencils, while throwing in some markers for better definition.

I loved that while the book is a good size, it is also small enough to carry around in a decent size bag. The quality is top notch and challenging. The lines are close together making it a very decent and colorful picture when you are done (dependent on your color choices of course) All in all, it was a very nicely put together coloring book that myself and my children will have fun with for weeks to come.

I seem to have jumped on the grown up coloring craze band wagon and will definitely be buying more. I can't wait for the Butterfly one to release on the first of October.
