Sustained (The Legal Briefs #2)

Expected August 25, 2015

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington DC, you see first-hand how hard life can be and that sometimes the only way to survive is to become harder. I have a reputation for being cold, callous, intimidating – and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me - I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will get you off. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming – and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room and am knee deep in a damn compost pit.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be hard, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that – that I know how to do.

Jake Becker is a disciplined, intimidating, in control, ruthless defense attorney. He has his small group of close attorney friends Stanton, Sofia, and Brent, and a list of previous hook-ups a mile long. But one event makes him question his man-whoring ways.

And around that same time his life becomes sucked into a whirlwind of chaos called the McQuaid family--A twenty-six year old Aunt and her six nieces and nephews ranging from teen to infant. Soon enough he is immersed in their trouble and drama and pushed out of his comfort zone. And their Aunt Chelsea makes a big impression on Jake. But no matter how much he would like to spend some "quality time" with the hot, sexy aunt, they can't seem to catch a break.

It's real life mayhem and madness times six, but I loved watching Jake getting pulled into a world so different than the one he's been living in. I loved how he used his "take charge" work attitude and applied it to six kids. And the interactions and relationships between all of them were priceless.

Chelsea was a truly likable heroine. She was mature, but funny and feisty. She stood her ground and tried hard not to buckle under pressure. But under it all, she was vulnerable, sweet, and needed support. But she hated asking for help.

But Jake's got some demons hiding under his cocky veneer. And he has hidden vulnerabilities and fears that make him feel unworthy. He is not sure he can be the polished White Knight he thinks they need and deserve. Chelsea's got her hands full with the kids and all of their misadventures. And she often feels she has to prove she can handle it all. This is not the life either of them expected. And they didn't count on finding each other. But it's both all consuming and passionate, but challenging and scary as well.

Is it worth the risk to give your heart when so much is at stake and there can be so much to lose?

This was so so sweet, funny, and heartwarming. I loved Jake and Chelsea and each one of the endearing, rambunctious kids. I enjoyed Jake's no nonsense point of view. Sure he could be clueless sometimes and had a misguided sense of what was best for everyone, but under that lawyer veneer he had a good heart. I liked spending more time with Stanton and Sofia, and Brent. I am looking forward to Brent's story Appealed. He's so open, humorous, giving, and an all around likable guy. But I have a feeling that might be about to change once he meets his match.

Chelsea McQuaid is knee deep in kids. Caring for her nieces and nephews after her brother’s death has flipped her world upside down and she has little time for anything outside wrangling the six kids between six months and fourteen years old.

Jake Becker is ice-cold as a defender, only heating it up between the sheets before sending his one-night stands on their way.

When Jake takes a case defending one of the kids, he finds himself drawn to the overworked, overwhelmed woman. He also finds himself drawn to the household as a whole.

I love Jake. His noncommittal ways and his views of being a defense attorney and his sense of humor and general outlook had me continually laughing (even to the point of snorting) and turned things that usually make me turn up my nose into things I loved about him and were amusing traits rather than turn-offs.

Chelsea has a spark and fire to her that was great to read. Not only does she take on a responsibility raising her nieces and nephews that most people her age would consider too steep, but she fights for what she wants -- family -- with everything she has. She is a mama bear who developed those instincts out of necessity and in rapid pace.

Even in the middle of an epic fight, these six kids had me busting out laughing. While they are all going through various stages of grief, rebellion, and cuteness (depending on their ages), they all have such great personalities that are each well developed and believable.
There was so much about this whole book that I absolutely loved. Jake and Chelsea, the kids, Jake’s mom. Even some of the games that usually cause me to lose momentum in a book didn’t catch me up here. I didn’t want to stop reading on Sunday night, and I pushed aside other tasks on Monday just to binge on the rest of the book.

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs Series

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits" begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

When Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate - and prized - parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Christian Louboutins.
Brent has never let the loss of his leg in a childhood accident affect his ability to lead a fulfilling life. He sets high goals–and then he reaches them.
And now he has his sights set on Kennedy.
**
When Kennedy looks at Brent Mason, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell.

She’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore - she’s a DC prosecutor with a long winning streak behind her. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case and she thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.

But things aren’t exactly working out that way.

Because every fiery exchange has her wondering if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. Each argument and objection only makes him want her more. In the end, Brent and Kennedy may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.

APPEALED is a sexy, humorous romance about first crushes, second chances and the final verdict of the heart
