Fleeing with only her bow, horse, enormous pet wolf, and the cryptic clues hidden in her mother’s medicine journal, healer Meg Boswell gallops north towards freedom, running from the man who falsely accused her mother of witchcraft. Cursed with magical healing abilities, Meg knows that if she’s captured, she will die like her mother—atop a blazing witch’s pyre.
Winter winds rip across the Highlands, pressing Chief Caden Macbain forward in his desperate plan to save his clan. He’s not above using an innocent woman to bargain for peace if it keeps his clan from starving. But Meg isn’t who Caden thinks she is, and when she kills a man to save the clan, he must choose between duty and her life. For although he captured her to force a peace, Meg's strength and courage have captured Caden's heart.

Kim's Review:
I was drawn immediately into the story and 16th century Scotland. Heather McCollum's writing style just flows beautifully and made it enjoyable from start to finish.
It begins with Meg fleeing from the father she does not know that was responsible for her mother's death. He is coming after her to determine if she is a "witch" like her mother and marry her off to some Englishman. Meg is strong and determined to ride alone with her horse and pet wolf to and Aunt and Uncle in Scotland she does not know. Caden McBain Laird of Druim is on a mission to kidnap the niece of the rival clan Munro in order to bargain for peace for his people. He has headed to England to find her. Fatefully, they meet in transit and Meg unknowingly becomes Caden's hostage as he promises to deliver her to her Aunt and Uncle's keep.
After all, he had completed his mission on his very first day in England, He had captured Meg Boswell, and she didn't even know it.
He begins feeling protective over his hostage despite his better judgment. Once they reach the Highlands, The story and relationships continue to develop at a perfect pace. They are met with rivalries, mysteries, lies, danger, betrayal, and foul play. Caden has a good heart and truly is concerned with the well being of his clan. But he begins to see Meg as more than a pawn or hostage. He has to figure out how to resolve the issues of his clan, avoid the threat of impending war with rival clans and England, and protect his burgeoning feelings for Meg. Meg has to learn to accept her differences and realize their potential as gifts, as well as find her place amongst the clans.
Meg is a strong, caring, and brave heroine. Caden is a fierce warrior with a warm heart, loving, determined, and willing to make sacrifices for those that he loves. They have good chemistry together.
Peace. Caden needed peace to save his clan. He wouldn't let her hate him. Nay, he wouldn't let her, for he intended to kiss her again.
"I am always in control, but ye, lass, are you making me lose it."
How in bloody hell had he found such a match? Passion and spirit, beauty and courage. She was...everything.
How can one wee lass fill him with such power, such calm and happiness? It was beyond anything he'd ever experienced.
Her Aunt Rachel is also gifted and strong, and is very involved in many of the events that occurred. There are also various clansmen from angry old warriors to young friendly ones. The secondary characters are all developed well and truly give you the feeling of kinship and loyalty to their clans. And the villians make your skin crawl and have you cheering for them to be taken down.
I enjoyed the story the entire way. I was involved in both the relationship aspect of the story between Caden and Meg, as well as the action and danger lurking at every turn. The paranormal/healer aspect also adds a little more to the storyline. It moves quickly and keeps you interested all the way to a nerve wracking climax. I will definitely read more books by Heather McCollum and in this series...this is listed as book one of the Highland Hearts series.
