“Marry me.”

“What?” I stared back at him, unblinking.

He moved closer, taking my face in his hands. “I love you, Evie. I look into the future, and the only thing I see clearly is you. Marry me.”

What’s an eighteen-year-old girl who was madly in love with her nineteen-year-old boyfriend say?

Of course, I said yes.

Twenty-four hours later, I married Adam Gunner at a Vegas chapel to the sounds of “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. Not the best omen. I get that now.

Then, exactly one week later, I left him. I walked out, leaving behind my wedding ring, annulment papers, and my heart, and he never knew why.

I haven’t seen him since. Not in ten long years.

Now, he’s here, standing before me. Looking at me with nothing but hurt and hatred in his eyes, he wants answers.

Answers I can’t give.

Adam POV

Making my way through the hotel, I exchange pleasantries with the staff on duty. When I reach the coffee shop, I push open the door and step straight into the past.
Evie.
She’s standing behind the counter. Her face is turned slightly to the right, her attention on the TV mounted on the wall, and her hair is pulled back into a ponytail.
But it’s her.
I feel like a speeding train has hit me, and I’m pretty sure my heart has stopped beating.
It’s really her.
She’s here.
“Evie?” I breathe out her name, like I’m taking my first real breath in a very long time.
Her body stiffens at the sound of my voice. And I watch as her face turns my way. Those big whiskey-colored eyes that I fell in love with all those years ago meet mine, and my world stands still.

Adam Gunner has just existed for the last ten years as he never got over Evie Taylor. She brought light to his life for a brief period, but then she left him without warning or answers and destroyed him in her wake.

Ten years later, they cross paths again. And he still does not get straight answers. He is still angry and confused. She is sorry and guilt ridden, but not telling him what he needs to know. Emotions run high, but there is a huge barrier between them even though the attraction is still there.

She has secrets she is protecting and he has one too. The mystery was killing me! The tension, the pain, the questions, the lies all had me intrigued.

Adam is now harder, jaded, and fueled by anger. He has major trust and abandonment issues. Evie is still sweet, family oriented and sensitive. But she also feels guilty and sad for how things transpired. They have a connection and attraction that cannot be denied, but it is clouded by pain and regrets from their past.

Is it still love or just lust? Adam has a battle with his heart versus his head. She has the potential to make him happy, but could destroy him again just as easily. And he has the same potential for her if he cannot handle her secret.

Although I enjoyed learning about their past love in contrast to their present pain, at times I felt distracted with the frequency of flashbacks (although their young love story was sweet and heartfelt and I wanted to see what happened then too). I was just so tense about the present, and was so frustrated with both of them. The secrets, the holding back, the anger, forgiveness issues and lack of real communication and trust that I was wanting some resolution in the present. I wanted to shake sense into both of them and I was surprised how certain situations played out and their reactions...and not always in a good way. Although I enjoyed this story and felt this couple belonged together, I guess I wish there was more time showing them happy especially in the present. It seemed to be so much heartbreak and anger and then finally everything was out. But I just kept waiting for the new happy. Then it seemed to rush to the ending despite having a dual pov epilogue.

I liked the side characters of his best friend Max, their friend Grady, her sister Casey and her Dad. They added some humor and some extra drama to the story. There was an antagonist that I despised. It was an interesting second chance love story and was written well and had depth. It was told in dual points of view past and present and covered around twelve years total. It was sweet, and romantic, but also heartbreaking and emotional.

Evie Taylor and Adam Gunnar had a once in a lifetime love. Deep and consuming, their romance included a year of dating and one week of marriage before Evie left her ring and annulment papers and disappeared without a trace. Adam picked up his life and continued on, but never got over the questions and hurt Evie’s disappearance left him with.

Ten years later, a chance encounter puts Adam and Evie face to face once more. Will Evie be able to explain what happened to make her run? And will Adam be able to forgive the woman he has never gotten over?

They are both holding secrets they don’t want to reveal. While I figured out her secret pretty early, I spent more time wondering what he may have been hiding for all those years. The tension between them was palpable, both from the secrets they kept and the chemistry between them.

I wish they would have been able to sit down and have a conversation. Granted, that would make for an awfully short book, but so many of their issues were compounded from years of silence and those secrets between them. I couldn’t help but shake my head at the way they handled several situations, both in the past and the present.

There was not a lot of happiness in their present day interactions. The mood was lightened with the idyllic flashback scenes, but knowing there was something that kept them apart for 10 years even dampened the brightness of those flashbacks. The present was filled with the hurt and confusion of the 10 year separation, but also with the reminder that they still had the chemistry that drew them together all those years before. While the resolution promised the happiness that I wished for them, it happened so quickly that most of the happy was left to my imagination rather than gifted in the story.

Overall, this was an entertaining take on a second chance love story. The side characters, both helpful and antagonistic, added to the entertainment and enjoyment factor of the book. The sweet aspects of the book are contrasted with deep heartache and those emotions transferred off the page seamlessly.
