Release Day February 19, 2019
New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas delivers a scintillating tale of a beautiful, young widow who finds passion with the one man she shouldn't...
Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: he's a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband's life a misery, and she'll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself...as none other than West Ravenel.
West is a man with a tarnished past. No apologies, no excuses. However, from the moment he meets Phoebe, West is consumed by irresistible desire...not to mention the bitter awareness that a woman like her is far out of his reach. What West doesn't bargain on is that Phoebe is no straitlaced aristocratic lady. She's the daughter of a strong-willed wallflower who long ago eloped with Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent—the most devilishly wicked rake in England.
Before long, Phoebe sets out to seduce the man who has awakened her fiery nature and shown her unimaginable pleasure. Will their overwhelming passion be enough to overcome the obstacles of the past?

More Ravenels and Wallflowers! Yes, please! I love stepping back into this world with these families.
Phoebe, Lady Clare, is the widowed daughter of Sebastian and Evie. Phoebe, her two young sons, and the whole family is traveling for brother, Gideon's wedding to Pandora Ravenel. She already is concerned about seeing one wedding guest who used to bully her husband as a child at boarding school. But she is not prepared for the man he is now and has no idea how meeting him could change her life.
West Ravenel is a man who has tried to start over and redeem himself. He has worked hard for two years to help his brother refurbish an estate and care for their cousins. But he has no title, fortune, or lands of his own and his bad reputation is not something that he can ever truly escape. He is a former wastrel who is now a glorified estate manager. He had a rough upbringing and has never felt worthy or good enough. But he is smart, hardworking, and forward thinking.

They never wanted to be attracted to each other. She never anticipated learning about the land from him, or how he would inspire passion in her, or care for her sons. She has her own estate to deal with and her husband's family that is involved. And West has no intention of ever getting married and even if he did, his lack of self worth and protectiveness would keep him from bringing her down.
But Phoebe is intelligent and determined just like her parents taught her to be. And she is just coming into her own and beginning to follow her own gut and make up her own mind on various topics.
But is she strong enough to convince an equally stubborn man that she does not care about his past or lack of title and wealth? Or will he help convince her to take the safe route that her husband wished for her to follow?
This is a story about hope, healing, love, acceptance, and redemption. My heart broke for both Phoebe and West as they struggled with their own issues. They were so good together, but just had so little hope that they could ever be more due to circumstances. West had such a loving heart and good intentions and sacrificed to his own detriment, but he saw it as penance for his wild past and never really had the support and love to make him feel worthy as a person. Phoebe had become used to being told what to do by men, but was beginning to realize that she needed to trust herself and take more control of her own life. And trust is the most important part of this story since in order to trust the other person, they also had to trust in themselves, while also being willing to take a risk.
This rich and vibrant world with complex characters and interesting dynamics never fails to pull me right back in. I loved getting more with the parental group from the Wallflowers books and other Ravenels and friends. I still adore Sebastian, and the Devil himself was an important part of this story...talk about a man who understands the power of redemption. I would have loved to have had just one more chapter or an epilogue at the end. I hope we continue to see more from these characters in future books featuring the offspring of the original Wallflowers or other side characters.
After reading some other historicals recently, I have come to realize that Lisa Kleypas really is just an exceptional author when it comes to creating characters that you cannot help but love despite their flaws, and brings just enough angst, drama, passion, and betrayal to keep you totally invested. I hated to put this book down and was sad when it is over because I am not ready to leave this world again.

I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
“If you have any misguided thoughts about taking me into your bed, you would find it a vastly mediocre experience. I’d be on you like a crazed rabbit, and half a minute later the whole thing would be over. I used to be a proficient lover, but now I’m a burnt-out libertine whose only remaining pleasure is breakfast food. Speaking of which—”
Phoebe reached for him, brought herself up hard against him, and interrupted him with her mouth. West flinched as if scalded and held very still in the manner of a man trying to withstand torture. Undeterred, she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him as passionately as she could, touching her tongue to his stiff lips. The feel and taste of him was exhilarating. Suddenly he responded with a primitive grunt and his mouth clamped on hers, wringing sensation from her with demanding pressure. Forcing her lips apart, he searched her with his tongue the way she remembered, and it felt so good, she thought she might faint. A whimper rose from her throat, and he licked and bit gently at the sound and sealed their mouths together in a deep, insatiable kiss that involved his lips, breath, hands, body, soul.
Whatever it might be like to go to bed with this man . . . it would be anything but mediocre.

What a stunning cover on this book!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading this one and seeing the wallflowers again and of course my favorite Sebastian. I first read about Phoebe as a baby in Mine Till Midnight.
