I never expected to be anyone’s white knight. That’s not a role I’ve ever played.
But when the Casso crime family shifts into uncharted territory, they’re looking for a new hero, and they’re looking for me—Cannon Freeman, the black sheep.
But my time in disgrace is at an end.
It’s my turn to rise up and save the people who matter most to me.
Even if my family has never given a damn about me, I will not let them fall.
More than anything, I will not let her fall.
It's time to find out what happened after that Holy Moly Freaking ending from book one! But it also starts to give us even more background into Cannon's past and relationships.
They are now facing the fallout from decisions made in the first book. Cannon is now feeling betrayed, confused, angry, and trying to sort out the mess that Drew has put them in. Since he is now aware of her lies and schemes, that could make him an accomplice. And one thing that Cannon does not need is his father, his men, or their enemies coming after him or Drew. He has always been the outcast of the family and does not feel respected, but now he is getting more and more in the middle of business. And things are heating up in a turf war and situations are starting to unravel. It is only a matter of time until things boil over and get really messy.
This brings back many old friends with Cannon's step-siblings and their mates. There are plenty of interpersonal dynamics going on in this group of illegitimate children. My heart actually hurt for Cannon as he was feeling betrayed by love and was also still feeling the loss of his brother/best friend, Creighton, over his past mistakes. Cannon is a man who does not really know where he fits in and always seems to be fighting for scraps. I was just as invested in Cannon and Creighton's need to heal and reconnect as I was the main story.
This is action-packed, suspenseful, emotional, and full of tension of feels. I totally fell for Cannon over the course of this duet. And even though I hated that the heroine started off lying to Cannon, I could understand her motivations and admired her tenacity for trying to find out the truth at all costs. I had no idea where the story was going to go and how it could possibly end up in their favor. And it took some definite turns! Past and present stories all intermingle to form a web of secrets, lies, and dirty deeds. That is part of the fun of these romantic suspense stories with an edge. Every decision matters and one false move can have serious consequences.
I think I held my breath for much of this story. There was mystery, danger, and so much nail-biting tension. But at the core of it was finding a true connection and someone to fight for, and also the importance of family. They both had so many growth opportunities and it was truly a journey of self-discovery for them as they underwent trials and tribulations and uncovered more and more truths. Trust, vulnerability, and acceptance of faults and mistakes were not easy for either of them, but they had a trial by fire and the only way to survive sometimes is to take a leap of faith and hold on for dear life. I thoroughly enjoyed this duet and loved these characters especially Cannon. He totally has my heart. And it was fun to visit with other couples and friends.
Cannon has a lot of soul searching to do after the things he learns at the end of Black Sheep. Having always been on the outer edge of the family, he is a little lost when what he thought he knew is revealed to be a lie. I hated that she had to lie to him, but I also loved what was learned as a result of those lies, on both sides. His half-siblings also play a role in his decisions, and though he has always felt separate from them, I loved the way they come together here.
Cannon and Drew have more than that first scene to navigate and none of their choices were easy to make. They are both protective of the ones they love, and once they work through Drew’s lies and start to get to the bottom of why she was looking into the Casso family in the first place, their commitment to each other is put to the test in some very surprising ways.
This is a fast paced conclusion with surprises hidden throughout. And that final twist was one I never saw coming. I kept wondering how they were going to resolve all the problems they were circling around and in all my wildest imaginings I couldn’t have come up with a better twist for this couple.

This is an epic conclusion for the Dirty Mafia Duet! As I have come to expect from this author, the cliffhanger was worth the wait (and this time it didn’t feel as bad because the audiobook was there when I couldn’t wait any longer)!

Our 5 star reviews
From New York Times bestselling author Meghan March comes a story of untold truths and one man’s redemption in the Dirty Mafia Duet.
Every family has a black sheep.
In the infamous Casso crime family, that black sheep is me—Cannon Freeman.
Except I’m not a free man. I’ve never been free. Not since the day I was born.
I owe my loyalty to my father, Dominic Casso, even if he won’t publicly acknowledge me as his blood.
I’ve never had a reason to go against his wishes… until I met her.
Drew Carson turned my world upside when she walked into my club looking for a job.
Now, my honor and my life are on the line.
Going against my father’s wishes might buy me a bullet straight from his gun, but black sheep or not, it’s time to make my stand.
