6 HUGE Heart Bones Stars
It's been days and I'm still in a major book hangover!
CoHo's always hit or miss for me. I either love the shit out of her books or they're just alright. Heart Bones, thankfully, was an absolute love! I didn't want the journey between Beyah and Samson to end. They had me unconditionally addicted. I needed everything them.
I haven’t felt much in a long time when it comes to books, except maybe a lot of exasperation. This book absolutely wrecked me. I was an emotional train wreck. I'm not saying it didn't have a few flaws, but the way these characters made me FEEL eclipsed those.
I know I've said it a ton now but Beyah and Samson are everything. Their brokenness made every word and action towards their HEA worth every moment.
So yeah, highly recommend!!
P.s. I know it's cliché to say but this book really is best to go into blind.
Beyah and Samson's story quietly drew me in. Two lonely, broken people hiding their inner vulnerability from those around them and never expecting a connection. On the surface, they appear to be opposites, but deep down they are more alike than they even realize. But they gradually form a fragile and tenuous bond and begin letting the other in. She opens up more around him than anyone. But we see Beyah trying to gradually peel back Samson's layers, but he is resistant and more of an enigma.
Over the course of a summer, they challenge and question each other, they support and fight for the other, develop a bond, and leave a lasting impression.
This book has a sadness, a quiet intensity, and sweetness. There are parts that brought tears to my eyes and gut-punched me. Their lives have been based on secrets and isolation, but they strive for acceptance, faith, hope, forgiveness, self-worth, and a true connection. Both of the characters have opportunities for growth and they are a catalyst for change for the other. But their past has not been easy and neither is their present.
This is told exclusively in Beyah's point of view so we only know what Samson chooses to share. My only real criticism is that the first part weaves such an intriguing story, but the last part seems a bit rushed. This book screams the need for an epilogue! I will admit that I figured out a couple of major twists really early on, but that did not take away my enjoyment of the story. I just really wanted and needed a bit more at the end.
Samson’s knee brushes high up on my inner thigh and I’m glad he can’t see anything from my chin down, because my body is covered in chills right now.
“I didn’t think there were many people in the world like me,” he says.
“You think we’re alike?” I want to laugh at that comparison, but there’s not an ounce of humor in his expression.
“I believe we have a lot more in common than you think we do, Beyah.”
“You think you’re as alone in this world as I am?”
He folds his lips together and nods his head, and it’s the most honest thing I’ve ever seen. I never would have thought someone so well off could have a life as shitty as mine, but I can see it in the way he’s looking at me. Everything about him suddenly seems familiar to me.
He’s right. We are alike, but only in the saddest ways.
My voice comes out in a whisper when I say, “When I first met you on that ferry, I could tell you were damaged.”
There’s a flicker of something in his eyes as he tilts his head to the right. “You think I’m damaged?”
“Yes.”
He moves even closer in the water, but there wasn’t much space left between us to begin with. It’s deliberate, and so much of me is touching so much of him now. “You’re right,” he says quietly, slipping a hand around the back of my left knee. “There’s nothing left of me but a fucking pile of debris.” He pulls me to him, wrapping both my legs around him. That’s all he does, though. He doesn’t try to kiss me. He just connects us together as if that’s enough while our arms keep us both afloat.
I’m swiftly succumbing to him. I don’t know in what way. All of them, maybe. Because right now, I need him to do something else. Anything else. Taste me. Touch me. Drag me under.
We watch each other for a moment and it’s almost like looking into a broken mirror. He leans in slowly, but not toward my mouth. He presses his lips against my shoulder, so gentle it feels like a graze.
I close my eyes and inhale.
I’ve never felt anything so sensual. So perfect.
