The night Luke Rosen met Scarlett Marks was the only time he’s regretted becoming chief of police. One horrific night of blood and death, and now she’s living under his roof—all because he swore an oath to serve and protect.

Scarlett is stubborn and infuriating. She has no respect for the order in his structured life, and she never does anything she’s told. Worse, she doesn’t seem to care that the information she has on a motorcycle gang means she might end up dead. But her unwavering strength, her courage and tenacity and beauty, makes it impossible for him to abandon her.

If Luke is going to keep her safe, he’ll have to make the hardest decision of his life. He can either honor his values as a cop, knowing Scarlett is unlikely to survive . . . or he can break all the rules and protect the woman who’s invaded his home and his heart.

I have been anxiously awaiting Sheriff Luke Rosen and Scarlett Marks' story. Presley's twin sister has been through hell and back and has now been put in hiding. The safe house is stripping her of any fight and will to live. But Luke finally shows up to save the day again. Now she is living in secret in his home and they are taking her protection day by day.

Scarlett has been trapped, abused, and taken for granted her entire life. She is now a lost, lonely, scared, shell of a woman with little hope of getting out of the mess her ex-boyfriend left her in. She does not trust easily, but Luke eventually begins to win her over. And slowly she begins to find herself along the way.

Luke is patient, kind, honorable, dependable, attentive, and protective. He gives her the time, space, and care she needs until she is ready to trust and open up. The closer they get, the more it makes them both want to fight for a real future.

But when she spills all of her dark secrets, will it put Luke in a position to choose love over duty?

This is a slow-burn, romantic suspense story that gradually builds to love, hope, and empowerment. I loved Luke so much. He is the ultimate good guy and just what Scarlett deserves, but also torn by his honor and oath. She is so pure of heart and just wants to feel normal, safe, and loved so much. They are stuck in what seems like an impossible situation with no good answers. It seems like one of them is destined to lose or compromise something important, and their lives could actually be at stake.

I enjoyed seeing more with her long lost sister, Presley, and all of the couples and characters from the previous books.  The overall story focuses on repercussions from events in the last book and continues the ripple effect the MCs have on their lives. This one just builds and builds with tension and suspense to an exciting climax. This series is getting better and better and I am becoming more and more invested. I am looking forward to Leo and Emmett's books next.
Scarlett and Luke’s story is one I have anticipated as long as the idea has been in my head since we met Scarlett and bits of her story were teased. Luke hasn’t been chief of police for long, but he values the honor of protecting the citizens of his town, and keeping his people safe. He also values the peace that has come since the Tin Gypsys disbanded and though he knows Dash and his crew walk a fine line, he has no qualms with the former MC club as long as they maintain the peace. But when Scarlett races into town to take refuge with her sister, she brings a storm down with her in the form of the rival MC from a few hours away.

Scarlett is holding secrets from her time with the MC, and those secrets are both her saving grace and the threat looming over her. People are searching for her, but she isn’t sure who is in her best interests to trust with the secrets. Luke has to decide how far he’ll go to protect her. Is he willing to risk his honor as a cop to keep her secrets safe?

I loved everything about this story. Scarlett has learned a lot about herself since she left her abusive childhood home behind, but she also knows she didn’t figure things out in time to prevent pain in her adult life. She doesn’t feel like she is strong like her sister, Presley. Presley got out long ago, but Scarlett is softer. But now that she is away from the demands of her father, she isn’t sure she wants to follow orders blindly either.

They have fantastic chemistry. From the start when they are each walled up and distant, the cracks begin to show immediately. Luke finds himself bringing Scarlett to his own home to continue her protective detail -- what better place to hide a witness than right under everyone’s noses. Luke is such a patient hero. He has strong moral compass and his honor as an officer of the law is important to him. He knows some of the decisions he is making skirt the line of what he would normally consider ok, but he worries that if he plays this one by the book he will lose everything.

The teaser for Fallen Jester has me itching to get my hands on Leo’s story. The little glimpse we get of the heroine of the story had me feeling first sympathy towards her and then glee as I realized how she was tied in other ways to the characters. As this series builds, I fall deeper in love with all the little connections between each new installment, how the characters are woven together in unexpected and surprising ways, driving not only the plots of the individual books but the series as a whole.

“If you’re not going to get out of the way, I’ll just go around.” I spun on my shoes, whirling the opposite direction, but when I went to take a step and carry my basket away, I suddenly found its weight missing from my arm. He’d stolen it from me before I’d had the chance to clutch it tight.
Then the world was spinning. The floors, the ceiling, everything flipped topsy-turvy.
I’d fainted.
No, that wasn’t right.
I was being carried. Hauled. That had been Luke’s threat and damn it, I’d underestimated him. The chief had made good on his word.
His shoulder dug into my belly as he walked. I lifted my face, pushing the hair out of my eyes. My basket of food sat exactly where I’d been standing. My chicken and rolls and cookies and chocolate milk. The items grew smaller with every one of Luke’s strides.
“Put me down.”
He kept walking.
“Put me down!” I shouted.
Still, he kept walking.
I lifted a hand and raised it above my head. My hair kept falling in front of my face, obscuring my vision, but that didn’t stop me from using every ounce of strength I had left. I brought my fist down on Luke’s lower back. Except my aim was shit so I didn’t hit his back. No, my fist bounced off his firm, perfect ass.
Luke didn’t so much as break his stride. “I promised Presley I’d keep you safe.”
And without another word, without stopping, he carried me in a fireman’s hold out of the grocery store and into the snow.
I was going back to the daisies, whether I wanted to or not.
Hello, Scarlett. I’m rock bottom.
