The Past Never Stays Buried

Anna Albertini is settling into a routine while ignoring the fact that the blue-eyed Irishman she’d allowed into her bed has up and disappeared on her. Two weeks without a phone call is no big deal, but still. With her hottie Italian boss goofing up the prosecuting attorney’s office, she at least has something to fix. Until she appears in court, across from her sister Tessa’s dirtbag ex. Then she has a mission.

Unfortunately, Anna isn’t the only person who wants the ex put behind bars…or in the ground. Which is not a problem until she and a local cop find the ex-boyfriend deader than dead…with both her sister and Aiden standing over the body.

As a prosecuting attorney, it’s Anna’s job to build a case against Tessa and Aiden. As a sister, it’s SO her job to get Tess out of this mess. As Aiden’s…what? Lover—girlfriend—friend from the past—it’s Anna’s job to figure out who the heck he really is. She has to dig out the truth, regardless of her ambitious boss or the cranky cop trying to thwart her every move. Sometimes a woman has to take matters into her own hands, regardless of the consequences.

Anna Albertini is overworked and a bit frazzled. Her new boss fired all the other staff. Her wannabe boyfriend took off after a hot fling and saving her. And now he has turned up after a couple weeks...but unfortunately in a room with a dead guy, Anna's sister, and a gun. So now it looks like Anna has another mystery to solve and has to get not only Aiden out of trouble again, but also her sister. Just another day at the prosecuter's office...or maybe not.

Aiden has saved her twice now, but he remains a mystery. Is he a good guy, a bad guy, or something in between? He pushes her away, then pulls her closer, just to repeat the pattern. But she cannot help being drawn to those eyes and wanting him to be a hero.

She is now juggling trying to do her job in the prosecutor's office while trying to get answers and help solve the case. Kind of a delicate balance and Anna is not just the delicate type. She is also dealing with a few stubborn men, and a whole host of meddling family members. Anna does not seem to have any calm and quiet days. And she has the uncanny ability to put herself in harm's way and be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  She is smart, nosy, brave, and so determined to find out the truth that she does not always think about the consequences.  And at other times, her luck just stinks.

Will she save the day or need to be saved herself again?

This is a fast-paced, layered, humorous, chaotic, romantic suspense story with a lot of moving parts. Her shenanigans in this one at times gave me the heebie-jeebies and other times I was on the edge of my seat. This woman finds herself in the middle of mysteries, threats, murders, flying bullets, kidnappings, malicious media, and run ins with all kinds of characters. It is hard to tell who is friend, foe, or has nefarious intentions. And even Anna's poor friends seem to find themselves mixed up in her messes as well.

The story has surprises and twists, but does finally give us some answers that were left hanging at the end of book one.  Yes, we finally get to know what Aiden's real deal is! The end of this one gives us the closure we need, but also sets up Anna with some new challenges for the next book. And I am excited to see more with her sisters Tessa and Donna, and all the available men that Anna wants to set them up with.
This book came across my stack at the perfect time. I needed a light-hearted, fun, slightly off the wall storyline like the Anna Albertini stories are stacking up to be. Ann is still new to trial law, and she hasn’t taken a case all the way to trial yet. But she manages to find herself in the middle of several cases that have her testing the limits of the law and her experience.

Working in the prosecutor's office is her dream job, but she never imagined she’d face her sister’s ex in court only to find him hours later dead, with her maybe-lover and her sister both standing over the body.

I have to say, Anna is a hoot. She is a delightful mix of clueless and competent. She’s smart, but makes decisions with her heart that lead her straight into the middle of things she doesn’t understand with no thought to the danger she is putting herself (and those around her) into.

I have enjoyed questioning Aiden’s motives and the truth regarding where he has been. He’s a little bit heart-throb and a lot of danger wrapped up in a devilishly handsome package. And since Anna knows what he’s packing in his package, he’s even harder to resist when he turns up again. She has always wanted him to be her hero, and even when he disappears without a trace, she can’t help but keep the hope that he’ll come back and be the good man she sees inside of him.

I couldn’t help but be pulled into the entertainment of this book. The small town, big family vibes played into this, with Anna’s family around every corner, and everyone with their own opinion. News travels fast with as connected as everyone is. This book gives us some answers to some of the big questions that were left hanging in the first book, but also sets up the next book nicely. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Anna’s grand adventures!

“How long has Aiden Devlin been dating your sister?” Detective Pierce expertly switched topics.
If he was looking to trip me up, he’d failed. “Aiden and Tess aren’t dating. I have no idea where he has been for the last two weeks.” It wouldn’t do to lie to Pierce right now, and I didn’t see a reason not to tell him the truth. “Before you ask, I don’t know why Aiden was at Tess’s apartment or if he had any prior relationship with Danny Pucci.” But I was sure going to find out.
“So you don’t know why Devlin’s knuckles were as beat to shit as the dead body’s?” Pierce asked.
Yeah, I’d noticed that as well. “Nope.”
Pierce twirled a pen on his desk. “This isn’t looking good for your sister.”
Considering I hadn’t talked to her yet, I didn’t know how bad it looked. “Did you test her hand for GSR?” I asked the question like I knew what I was talking about and hadn’t binge-watched Law & Order all day Sunday, where is actually how I’d learned about gunshot residue. A homicide case was way above my pay grade.
“She tested positive,” Pierce said, seeming relaxed but definitely not missing anything.
I rolled my eyes. “If she picked up the gun that had been used to kill Danny, then the residue would be on her hand. You know that.” I thought that was the truth.
“I also know that only a moron would pick up a gun in that situation,” Pierce retorted. “Unless she was frightened by Devlin. But I’d have to ask what he was doing there.”
I swallowed. “Did you test Aiden’s hand?”
“Yep. Positive as well,” Pierce said, watching me like a bird of prey. “According to him, he was target practicing yesterday, but that’s all he’d own up to—so far. I’m off to interview him next.”
“What about Tessa?”
Pierce shook his head. “She lawyered up right away with Clark Bunne. Wouldn’t say a word.”
Relief cooled the hot ball of anxiety in my stomach. Okay. Good. “Well, then. I guess I’ll go talk to her and figure this out. Let’s hope you’re as good of a detective as you think you are.” With that zinger, I stood.
“Albertini? You’ll have to talk to her tomorrow,” Pierce drawled.
I stopped cold, still facing him. “Why?”
“Because I just arrested her for suspicion of murder. She’s being processed now.”

Bullets and Kisses Can Burn

The last person Anna Albertini expects to see in an orange jumpsuit in District Court—a place she SO doesn't belong as a new prosecuting attorney—is Aiden Devlin, the man who'd saved her life when they were kids. For years, she has dreamed about him. Now here he is—his eyes blue, his chest wide, and his hands in cuffs.

Sure, Aiden says he doesn't want her help, and his ties to a deadly motorcycle club should give her warning. Yes, her new boss is a sexy Italian bad boy who might be using the case to climb to the top. Plus, the detective assigned to the case, with his green eyes and broad shoulders, wants her to stay out of his way.

With so much testosterone surrounding her all of a sudden, most women would find it hard to concentrate. This might be why the case leads Anna to yelp during a spa appointment, fall out of a tree, and chase a naked old man around the courtroom. It's a good thing Anna learned a long time ago to be her own hero, no matter how fast the bullets fly or the kisses consume.
