I always believed in fairy tales, but he preferred horrors.
Damian Blackstone didn’t care about my existence. He came into my world for one reason only. He came to find answers about his past.
He moved like the villain in my favorite fairy tales. He wasn’t the one who received the happily ever afters; he was the one who destroyed them.
Which was why I couldn’t understand why the man who raised me set it up in his will for Damian and me to be married. I wasn’t certain I’d be able to live with a man like Damian. We were as opposite as any two people could be. I loved to bathe in the sunlight while he prospered in the shadows.
I didn’t think I’d develop feelings for the one who looked at me as if I were nothing more than a means to an end. Yet in his darkness, sometimes I’d see sparks of light. I’d see gentleness. I’d see his soul.
We became entangled with one another as we fell into mistakes and called them fate. I was his Cinderella, and he was my Beast.
I wasn’t certain that twisted fairy tales ended with happily ever afters.
Still, I was determined to find out.
I loved the dark but deep Damian when we met him in Eastern Lights as Connor's best friend. And now he is starting over in California and is also in search of more answers about his past after the death of a father he never met. His guard is back up and he does not do well with new people...especially sensitive or dramatic ones.
Stella Mitchell was raised by Damian's biological father while Damian grew up in foster care. The situation already sets him on edge. And having to deal with a woman in crisis, three crazy ex-wives/stepmothers, lawyers, and some crazy demands from the dead just might send him over.
Cinderstella and the Beast. Sunshine and darkness. Villain and heroine. Dreamer and destroyer.
Stella is kind, sweet, independent, talkative, quirky, and a good person. Damian is sarcastic, broody, bitter, guarded, and a loner who keeps people at arm's length when he can. But when he lets someone in, he is loyal, protective, and genuine. He has that hard armor on to protect his soft, vulnerable center. Both have battered self-esteem and shattered souls but they deal with it differently. Stella aims to please everyone and see the good in people, but she also tends to overthink. While Damian is also stellar at analyzing people's intentions, he often sees the negative and harsh reality of the situations. Both have trust, self-worth, and abandonment issues. Stellas is determined to break down his barriers, and Damian just may be defenseless against her.
This is an emotional forced proximity, arranged marriage, opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine story about loss, fear, hope, healing, love, and acceptance. Putting two people together with such deep emotional scars is bound to be messy, but sometimes the best things come when least expected. But healing does not always occur in a linear fashion and issues can rear their ugly heads sporadically. They do have their share of issues and challenges to work their way through.
I adored these two together. Damian totally had me swooning and sometimes just wanting to hug him. And I admired Stella's journey of healing as well. I loved getting more with Connor and Aaliyah and their close bond with Damian. Grams Maple was also a special and unique character. By the epilogue, my heart felt restored and Damian is still one of my favorite complex heroes. And that cover is perfection...Damian personified!

Damian Blackstone grew up in the foster system and though he has made a name for himself in real estate, still carries the emotional scars from his childhood. When he learns the father he didn’t know has passed away, he moves to California to learn more.
Stella Mitchell was adopted by her mom’s best friend after she passed away. Growing up, she knew she was loved by her Grams and Kevin, but the stepmothers that came and went from her life did their damage.
These two are such opposites - from their parental status, to their personalities, they have very little in common until the reading of Kevin’s will. Stella is light, open minded, and sees the best in everyone. She was raised in a home that, even with evil stepmothers in and out of her life, was filled with love. Damian learned early not to get attached to the people or homes he was in, and that detachment has continued into adulthood. When Kevin’s will stipulates they must marry for a period of 6 months in order to inherit, they each decide the ends justifies the means, though for different purposes.
I was pulled so far and quickly into this story that I couldn’t help finishing it in one day full of reading. I was surprised by several turns of events and spent much of the book trying to figure out the biggest piece of information Damian was looking for.
This was an emotional, close-proximity, arranged marriage, opposites attract novel. I loved Damian from the start, even when he was prickly and closed off. Stella’s quirks took me a little bit to connect with her, but more because I could see how the people around her often took advantage of her ability to see the best in people. As the third in the Compass series, I loved the little glimpses of Connor and Aaliyah, and loved to see their connection to Damian in a different location.
Even the town’s black sheep needed a friend sometimes
All I wanted to do was run away, I never expected to crash into his arms…
After leaving the city life behind to escape my loveless marriage, I moved to small town Havenbarrow for a fresh start.
What I didn’t expect was to find myself drawn to the town’s black sheep.
They called him troubled. Cold. A man with a dark past.
What everyone seemed to miss about Jax was the splashes of light in his eyes. The random acts of kindness he performed when no one was watching. The way he made me smile and laugh.
Jax helped unpack the baggage I’d been carrying around with me. He was patient with my pain and gentle with my scars. He was the stillness during my hurricane.
Yet when both of our pasts come back to haunt our present days, we realized quickly that sometimes loves stories didn’t end the way we’d hoped.
Sometimes you were left with only the damage from the storm.
I once met a man on a cold Halloween night. He dressed as a superhero, and I dressed in red. For one night, I was his break from reality, and he was the temporary fix for my broken heart.
Two years later, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to become a senior editor at one of the biggest magazine companies in the world. The only catch? Nail an exclusive interview with New York’s finest bachelor: Connor Roe.
To the rest of the world he was becoming one of the wealthiest men in New York City. To me, he was simply my once upon a time superhero.
My job was to get an exclusive interview with New York’s hottest bachelor. Never in my life did I expect him to want an exclusive with my heart, too.
The only problem with my growing feelings for him? I was set to marry his new business partner.
