Release Date February 25, 2022

A sexy standalone romance between a single dad athlete and the woman who got away!

Things that suck on my wedding day -- walking in on my groom kissing another woman twenty minutes before the ceremony.

Things that suck worse? The woman he’s kissing is my mom.

I head straight for the bowling alley bar down the street and ask for a double. And in walks a deliciously charming local football hero -- Harlan Taylor.

Yes, I’ll take another drink in the form of a one-night stand with this hunk of a man. In the morning, he asks if I want to get together again. More rebound nookie? Yes please!

But then I learn his football team just hired my yoga studio to teach downward facing dog to their star player, making my O-delivering hottie officially off limits.

Trouble is, the more time I spend working with the sexy single dad who dotes on his daughter, the more I’m feeling all the things far too soon.

There’s no way this can end well, but tell that to my runaway heart…

A Wild Card Kiss is a sexy, flirty sports romance featuring a charming, pie-baking, single dad who's never forgotten the red-hot kiss he planted on the feisty, sassy blonde one night years ago and a jilted bride heroine determined to move on from heartbreak. This story contains sexy times that can cure getting-left-at-the-altar blues, and heart-tugging swoony romance that’ll melt the most jaded hearts.

I loved Harlan in the Ballers and Babes series and always wanted to see him get his own book, so I was so glad this author is diving back into her San Francisco Renegades football world!

Harlan and Katie shared one hot encounter over seven years ago, but it was a "right person, wrong time" situation and never amounted to anything.

Their lives moved on. They focused on success in their careers. Harlan is no longer a "player" off the field, and is now a dad considering what he will do after his time as a football player ends. Katie's life was just about to make a big transition. But another chance meeting just might be the distraction she needs. Harlan is still hot-as-hell, sweet, flirty, and willing to get dirty. Katie is the girl that got away. Is it possible they got it right this time?

Well...

This is the story of two people with great potential just trying to get the timing right...but life seems to keep throwing them challenges. Just when they think they might be able to explore more, something gets in the way and some things are out of their control. But these two still manage to spend some time together and the connection and attraction is also something that they cannot completely rein in. But they have their conflicts and they are not easily fixed due to circumstances.

It's a flirty, steamy, sweet, swoony, second-chance, off-limits love story. I just adored them and they made me smile so much. I loved the fact that they have such a strong connection and genuine like for the other with fun banter and hot chemistry. They are also mature, responsible, and know what they want. They just have to figure out some things first.

Harlan is the perfect combo of easy-going, flirty, loving, charming Southern gentleman, and also a big, strong, confident, football player. Katie is spunky and smart and not afraid to go after what she wants. They are sweet and passionate together, and so much fun! Harlan is just the total package and brings all the swoon!  I also loved how they interacted with his cute daughter, Abby.  These sweet daddy/daughter vibes just touched my heart. They have their ride-or-die support systems, and I enjoyed some visits from old friends.

Harlan and Katie have a great story, filled with almost moments until the time is just right! I loved them together from the very start and each missed opportunity only had me wishing they could find their happily ever after the next time around. But it’s also a story about perfect timing, because without their bad timing, Abby would not have been part of the story and I loved her (and Danielle’s) inclusion in the story.

It has been a while since Lauren’s readers were in the San Francisco Renegades’s world of football, but the wait was well worth it! Harlan’s career has been steady and his leadership on the team is strong. But he is also reaching a point where he needs to make some decisions, and his thoughts weigh heavy on him (despite prodding from those around him) as he decides what his future will hold.

These two characters are strong as individuals, which make the most fun reads as couples. They are both driven in their careers and have strong thoughts about their plans for themselves. But just because they are each single doesn’t mean they have been avoiding finding the right someone. But it isn’t until they are together again that they realize there may have been a little bit of fate holding the cards even though neither really believes in that kind of thing.

Even though these two have several near misses (or near hits?) and a long timeline, the story moves quickly and keeps pace throughout. Part of that is the author’s snappy writing style and the rest is the absolute jun they have together. I’ve been in a bit of a reading rut lately and this is one of the stories that has helped pull me back out and reminded me what I love about reading and this genre.

I always believed in fairy tales, but he preferred horrors.

Damian Blackstone didn’t care about my existence. He came into my world for one reason only. He came to find answers about his past.

He moved like the villain in my favorite fairy tales. He wasn’t the one who received the happily ever afters; he was the one who destroyed them.

Which was why I couldn’t understand why the man who raised me set it up in his will for Damian and me to be married. I wasn’t certain I’d be able to live with a man like Damian. We were as opposite as any two people could be. I loved to bathe in the sunlight while he prospered in the shadows.

I didn’t think I’d develop feelings for the one who looked at me as if I were nothing more than a means to an end. Yet in his darkness, sometimes I’d see sparks of light. I’d see gentleness. I’d see his soul.

We became entangled with one another as we fell into mistakes and called them fate. I was his Cinderella, and he was my Beast.

I wasn’t certain that twisted fairy tales ended with happily ever afters.
Still, I was determined to find out.

I loved the dark but deep Damian when we met him in Eastern Lights as Connor's best friend. And now he is starting over in California and is also in search of more answers about his past after the death of a father he never met. His guard is back up and he does not do well with new people...especially sensitive or dramatic ones.

Stella Mitchell was raised by Damian's biological father while Damian grew up in foster care. The situation already sets him on edge. And having to deal with a woman in crisis, three crazy ex-wives/stepmothers, lawyers, and some crazy demands from the dead just might send him over.

Cinderstella and the Beast. Sunshine and darkness. Villain and heroine. Dreamer and destroyer.

Stella is kind, sweet, independent, talkative, quirky, and a good person. Damian is sarcastic, broody, bitter, guarded, and a loner who keeps people at arm's length when he can. But when he lets someone in, he is loyal, protective, and genuine. He has that hard armor on to protect his soft, vulnerable center. Both have battered self-esteem and shattered souls but they deal with it differently. Stella aims to please everyone and see the good in people, but she also tends to overthink. While Damian is also stellar at analyzing people's intentions, he often sees the negative and harsh reality of the situations. Both have trust, self-worth, and abandonment issues. Stellas is determined to break down his barriers, and Damian just may be defenseless against her.

This is an emotional forced proximity, arranged marriage, opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine story about loss, fear, hope, healing, love, and acceptance. Putting two people together with such deep emotional scars is bound to be messy, but sometimes the best things come when least expected. But healing does not always occur in a linear fashion and issues can rear their ugly heads sporadically. They do have their share of issues and challenges to work their way through.

I adored these two together. Damian totally had me swooning and sometimes just wanting to hug him. And I admired Stella's journey of healing as well. I loved getting more with Connor and Aaliyah and their close bond with Damian. Grams Maple was also a special and unique character. By the epilogue, my heart felt restored and Damian is still one of my favorite complex heroes.  And that cover is perfection...Damian personified!
Damian Blackstone grew up in the foster system and though he has made a name for himself in real estate, still carries the emotional scars from his childhood. When he learns the father he didn’t know has passed away, he moves to California to learn more.

Stella Mitchell was adopted by her mom’s best friend after she passed away. Growing up, she knew she was loved by her Grams and Kevin, but the stepmothers that came and went from her life did their damage.

These two are such opposites - from their parental status, to their personalities, they have very little in common until the reading of Kevin’s will. Stella is light, open minded, and sees the best in everyone. She was raised in a home that, even with evil stepmothers in and out of her life, was filled with love. Damian learned early not to get attached to the people or homes he was in, and that detachment has continued into adulthood. When Kevin’s will stipulates they must marry for a period of 6 months in order to inherit, they each decide the ends justifies the means, though for different purposes.

I was pulled so far and quickly into this story that I couldn’t help finishing it in one day full of reading. I was surprised by several turns of events and spent much of the book trying to figure out the biggest piece of information Damian was looking for.

This was an emotional, close-proximity, arranged marriage, opposites attract novel. I loved Damian from the start, even when he was prickly and closed off. Stella’s quirks took me a little bit to connect with her, but more because I could see how the people around her often took advantage of her ability to see the best in people. As the third in the Compass series, I loved the little glimpses of Connor and Aaliyah, and loved to see their connection to Damian in a different location.

Our Reviews

Even the town’s black sheep needed a friend sometimes

All I wanted to do was run away, I never expected to crash into his arms…

After leaving the city life behind to escape my loveless marriage, I moved to small town Havenbarrow for a fresh start.

What I didn’t expect was to find myself drawn to the town’s black sheep.

They called him troubled. Cold. A man with a dark past.

What everyone seemed to miss about Jax was the splashes of light in his eyes. The random acts of kindness he performed when no one was watching. The way he made me smile and laugh.

Jax helped unpack the baggage I’d been carrying around with me. He was patient with my pain and gentle with my scars. He was the stillness during my hurricane.

Yet when both of our pasts come back to haunt our present days, we realized quickly that sometimes loves stories didn’t end the way we’d hoped.

Sometimes you were left with only the damage from the storm.

Our reviews

I once met a man on a cold Halloween night. He dressed as a superhero, and I dressed in red. For one night, I was his break from reality, and he was the temporary fix for my broken heart.

Two years later, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to become a senior editor at one of the biggest magazine companies in the world. The only catch? Nail an exclusive interview with New York’s finest bachelor: Connor Roe.

To the rest of the world he was becoming one of the wealthiest men in New York City. To me, he was simply my once upon a time superhero.

My job was to get an exclusive interview with New York’s hottest bachelor. Never in my life did I expect him to want an exclusive with my heart, too.

The only problem with my growing feelings for him? I was set to marry his new business partner.

RSVP to meet the latest cocky, sexy, and rich-as-sin Big Rock hero who will charm your pants off in this enemies-to-lovers romance!

There are three words most men can’t resist—I dare you.

So as you can see, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I had no choice when my buddies said “I bet you can’t get that brunette beauty to kiss you before the night ends.”

I proved them wrong, and oh how good it felt to be right when I swept the quick-tongued woman into my arms and kissed the breath out of her at the party.

But, I made a slight miscalculation.

Turns out she’s my brand new enemy.

And soon I’m locked in a fierce battle of wits with my sexy-as-sin nemesis. I’m determined to show the whole city that my company is offering the best new path to romance, and she’s dead-set on knocking me down. Publicly.

It’s the hottest game of one-upmanship I’ve ever played, punctuated by fiery kisses, dirty letters, and, after a heated argument, hate s-e-x.

You know what they say. Keep your enemies closer.

I keep her so damn close to my favorite body part.

Everything is fun and games…until I gamble something I can’t afford to lose.

My heart.
This is next-level Big Rock energy. Still fun, witty, sexy, but a bit more sophisticated and intriguing. But still the unfiltered male point of view with some creative input from the heroine throughout.

A night at the Lucky Spot bar turns a masquerade into more fun than expected. Two snarky, intelligent people sharing quips and bantering back and forth.

Easton Ford is a bit of an enigma. He is handsome, charming, successful, competitive, and focused on work. He thrives on being the leading matchmaker in New York with his Carpe Diem exclusive invitation-only parties.

Bellamy is confident, smart, resourceful, and bold. She has her own interest in the dating scene with her romance podcast. And she has her sights set on profiling Easton and his methods.

Just when he thinks he has missed his chance, a new opportunity presents itself.  It's a cat and mouse with these two. The flirty, sarcastic banter, and one-upping each other. He likes to be in control, but she challenges him and gets under his skin. He is a bit of an enigma she wants to unravel.

They are worthy opponents that have strong opinions and conflicting ideas of how best to find love. And her public opinion is not always favorable regarding his exclusive parties. But they also have respect, appreciation, attraction, and witty rapport with a side of antagonism, competition, and frustration. The aggravation, picking, and teasing also ramp up the sexual tension. And eventually, things are bound to combust into bedroom buddies and orgasm sharers. But she wants to find forever love and he does not think that he will ever truly love again, so once again they are on opposite sides.

Bets, understandings, and challenging each other's beliefs occur while also partaking in definitely not-date datish-type meet-ups and new friends with bennies. But it is not supposed to be anything serious. But the lines might get just a bit hazy and blurred.

Can they find a way to see the other's side of things and meet more in the middle? And will Easton see that maybe a second chance at love could bring happiness and not just a chance for heartache?

This is an entertaining, snarky, hot, adversaries-to-lovers rom-com set in the Big Rock world. I loved all the different sides of Easton that unravel during the story. And even though he does not always get things right the first (or several times), I loved seeing him begin to try to figure things out. And Bellamy is just so smart, bold, and sassy. It brings back some old friends and some newer ones I am looking forward to hearing more about. I have a girl crush on Grandma Coco. I enjoyed hanging out more with Spencer, and getting to know TJ and Nolan even more.
Easton runs a matchmaking company based on real life meet-ups at parties. Bellamy, as part of her dating podcast, swears by digital apps for finding the perfect match. And that one difference is only the first of many things these two can find to banter about. When a dare puts Easton in front of Bellamy, the sparks fly between these two witty, intelligent main characters, leading to their own dare/bet/agreement.

Both are strongly opinionated about dating - Easton is only in it for fun, while Bellamy is looking for something serious. But they strike up an agreement that is mutually beneficial. Their opinions don’t only diverge when it comes to dating. Their chemistry sizzles from the beginning and only flares higher when they disagree.

This was entertaining, witty, and sexy. Returning to the Big Rock world was so much fun with favorite character cameos and memorable location revisits.

My new neighbor is a firefighter--and a scorching hot single dad--but I swear I didn’t set off that smoke alarm on purpose.

(And I was beyond mortified when he rushed in and saw me naked.)

Nothing happened, of course--because I, Winnie MacAllister, romance junkie and owner of a constantly broken heart, have sworn off men for one solid year.

Even protective men with chiseled jaws, bulging biceps, and deep brown eyes that make my breath come faster. Even former SEALs with broad chests and strong hands that make my skin sizzle. Even gorgeous, grumpy guys who have their hands full raising two adorable little girls and claim they don’t believe in love.

Until Dex kisses me one night, and I drop all my defenses.

(Also my underwear.)

He says he’s not gentle, and he’s right. He says I should take the dream job I’m offered in another state, and he’s right. He says he’s too old for me and could never be the man I deserve.

He’s wrong.

Dex and I might be twelve years apart, but the fire between us is the kind that will never burn out.

How can I convince him to give happily-ever-after with me a chance?

This begins a next-gen series with kids from Cloverleigh Farms, Bellamy Creek, and Abelard Vineyards...and I am here for it.

Winnie MacAllister is a twenty-two-year-old, romantic, dreamer, and optimist. She is a people-pleaser and likes to make others happy. But she has not had a good history with choosing the right men to give her heart to. So she has sworn off men for a year and made a bet with her best friend to hold her accountable.

All is fine and good until she spies the hot, built, handsome, new next-door neighbor outside her window.  Dex is a thirty-something, divorced, single dad, firefighter, and ex-Navy Seal, who has sworn off relationships forever. He is jaded, foul-mouthed, broody, and closed-off, but totally devoted to his girls.

His daughters take to Winnie right away. And no matter how he tries to talk himself out of it, he cannot help being attracted to the gorgeous girl next door. And when he finds out she is not looking for love either and is game for a hot fling with him, it seems like a great idea to work it out of their systems and have some uncomplicated fun.

But the closer they get, the messier it gets. He has issues and does not feel like he has anything to give to such a young, vivacious woman with a bright future ahead of her. He is so protective that he sometimes pushes her away for both of their protection. And Winnie's soft heart can only take so much of a beating.

Winnie has some choices to make for her own life and Dex will have to figure out if he is okay with letting her move on without him or if he can be brave enough to take a chance on what he was sure he did not want.

Winnie is such a wonderful, caring heroine and mature for her age. Dex is this tough guy that is scared to death of making the wrong choices for himself and his kids. He tries so hard to guard his heart and do what is right for everyone even if he has to sacrifice parts of himself. But I loved these two together even when I wanted to shake sense into them or scream in frustration. Luna and Hallie are totally adorable pixies that are completely entertaining.

This is a smile-inducing, swoony, sexy, heartfelt, grumpy-sunshine, next-door-neighbor, age-gap, single dad, not- supposed-to-be-a-true-love-story. It's about finding the person that seems all wrong but might just be the right one when you least expect it and having to figure out what to do about it.  I will admit I teared up a few times with some of the emotional scenes and big sweet gestures. But there were parts that had me laughing too.  It also illustrates the importance of family and I loved visiting with old friends and getting to know some of the other offspring. I am looking forward to Ellie's story and hope it is next.

She looked a little nervous, not that I blamed her, as she held out a small pink box of Band-Aids. “I had these lying around and thought Luna might want them for her knee. Band-Aids sometimes come off in the shower, so . . .”
I reached out and took them from her, noticing she was careful not to let our fingers touch this time. “Thanks.”
“That’s it—I just wanted to—um, okay, have a good night.” She turned to leave, and I probably should have let her.
“Wait a second.”
She faced me again, her expression still wary.
“I’m sorry about that.” I gestured over my shoulder with the pink box. “My ex-wife—the girls’ mom—knows how to get a rise out of me.”
“Oh, that’s okay. It’s none of my business, and I didn’t really hear anything.” It was obvious she’d heard everything.
I nodded slowly. “Well, thanks for the Band-Aids. Luna will appreciate it.”
Her smile was back, along with that stutter in my chest. “Good. Enjoy your night.”
“You too.”
She turned around and went down the steps, cutting across the lawn to her place with that same youthful bounce in her step. Glancing down at the box, I shook my head—of course she had a whole thing of pink princess Band-Aids. I shut the door and trudged up the stairs to get the kids cleaned up.
Hallie went first, after a brief attempt to get me to let her wear socks in the shower. As usual, I refused, explaining again that the entire house had been thoroughly cleaned before we moved in, and I’d been here yesterday to make sure of it.
While she was getting dressed, I made sure Luna washed her hair and used soap, then helped her get dried off. After hanging up their towels, I double-checked that they’d chosen appropriate clothing and was just about to get in my own shower when I heard a series of high-pitched beeps.
“What’s that?” Hallie said, scrunching up her face.
Instantly on high alert, I put my hand up. “Shh.” I heard it again, and recognized it as a smoke detector going off, but not in our house—we were hearing it through the walls. “Stay here.”
I raced out of their room and took the stairs down three at a time, jumping to the bottom with five to go. Barreling out my front door, I ran over to Winnie’s and knocked. The alarm was clearly coming from inside her unit, and when she didn’t answer the door, I made a split-second decision to bust in.
Fortunately, the door wasn’t locked.
I shouldered it open, relieved when I didn’t see or smell smoke right away. Winnie’s townhouse was laid out exactly like mine, and I immediately realized the detector going off was upstairs. Racing up the steps three at a time, I reached the master bedroom doorway just in time to see Winnie climbing onto a suitcase, one hand reaching toward the ceiling to disconnect the unit.
My jaw dropped.
She was totally naked and dripping wet.
One hand was clutching a small towel to her chest that didn’t fucking hide anything . Behind her, steam from her shower billowed from her bathroom, which must have been what set off the alarm—some detectors are that sensitive. Behind me, I heard clamoring on the stairs, and a second later both Hallie and Luna rushed into the bedroom.
Startled, Winnie looked over and saw us. Her eyes went wide as she screamed, lost her footing, and toppled backward off the suitcase. She landed hard on her ass, arms and legs flailing like a rag doll.
Averting my eyes, I strode over and disconnected the unit while she scrambled toward the bathroom on her hands and knees, presumably in search of a bigger towel.
But then she slammed the door . . . and didn’t come out.
The eighty-five decibel alarm had ceased, but the sirens in my head continued.
I looked at the girls. Luna had her hands over her mouth. Hallie’s eyes were wide, and she pointed to the bathroom door. “Winnie was naked,” she whispered. “We saw her bum.”
“Quiet,” I scolded angrily. “You two were supposed to stay at our house. You didn’t follow my orders.”
“But Daddy, we were scared,” Luna said. Her hair was still wet and tangled. “We came to find you.”
“We’ll talk about it later, but when I tell you to stay put, you stay put-especially in an emergency. Understand?”
They nodded.
“Now go back to our house, both of you.”
“But what about Winnie? Is she okay?”
I went over to the bathroom door and knocked, trying not to picture her naked. The shower wasn’t running anymore. “Winnie? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine!”
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine!” she repeated in the same false, bright tone.
A tiny smile inched onto my lips. “Are you sure?”

Note from the Author:

The heroine of IGNITE is one of Mack's three girls from IRRESISTIBLE! While IGNITE is a complete standalone, it's set in the world of Cloverleigh Farms--and savvy readers will recognize some other names too... I've always enjoyed bringing previous characters back for more. It feels like reuniting with old friends! And even though it's not necessary to read ANY prior books to enjoy IGNITE or any of the next generation Cloverleigh romances, if you're like me and you love knowing the history behind characters--or you just love a deep dive--you might like to check out The Frenched Series too! It starts with Mia and Lucas's story, a fan favorite and probably the hottest book I've ever written! (There's a connection in IGNITE...)
