Emerson Kane is a Deputy Sheriff in Appleton Falls. He moved to the small town from New York chasing something that did not quite end up how he hoped. He is a handsome, likable, and dependable guy who has worked hard to build his self-confidence and has found his place.

Dominic Starr is also a transplant from the NY police department, but he is running from his past while also seeking someone else. And that someone is the guy from high school that he never forgot despite a lot of denial....Emerson. He is more of a prickly loner who loves riling Emerson up and making him think he dislikes him.

But now, working in the same department, they snark, fuss, and are generally antagonistic. And they both are busy dating women and not finding what they really want. They both have a lot of unresolved thoughts and feelings about their past that they have just pushed down. And now that they are starting to spend more time together, they are also beginning to form more of a companionship and more exploration.

But the past does not always stay in the past. And even though they both tend to keep some things private and also try to protect the other, eventually they have to fully trust each other with some hard truths. And it all becomes a convoluted and dangerous situation that they will have to navigate together to have a chance of getting out of it and figuring out a future.

I was totally invested in these two and the tension and suspense of their story. I really liked both of the heroes. Though they were not friends in the past, they had this connection that had not been forgotten and just began to grow once they began to let down their walls and communicate.

This is an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, grumpy-sunshine, double bi-awakening, small town, secret crush, secret lovers, second chance romance with a hurt-comfort component and surrounded in intrigue and suspense. It brings back the characters from the first book, and sets a bit of a teaser for the next book.

Kiera West needs time and distance from her ex and the media. While her band is on an extended break, she takes her bandmate up on the offer of his family’s cabin in Ashford Creek.

These two were both struggling in their own ways. His past has him keeping everyone at arms length. Her past has her hiding from danger. I loved watching the vulnerability between them. They have both felt so much loss that their climb back up is so heartwarming to watch.

The pacing felt perfect for these two. There is so much emotional and grief that has to be unpacked and dealt with before anything real can form between them. There is a depth to this story that goes beyon da simple romance. The setting plays into the healing journey for both - for Bodhi to face the suspicions of his neighbors, and for Kiera to heal from the damage of her ex.

The title is absolutely fitting for this book. Both characters stand at crossroads, and even the town and some of the side characters are at their own. I love all the ties this town has and can’t wait to read more from this family and town.

Becker James has been frequenting his bar for quite a while. He’s younger, quiet, socially awkward, and just loves to watch the hot bartender. But one day as he’s listening to their conversations as he usually does, he finds out that their beer league team is in need of a goalie for an important hockey game, so he offers his services. It turns out Beck is kind of hiding the fact that he’s actually a goalie for the minor league team, but that fun game fires him up to do better in his own team games and brings him back some joy to hockey.

Beck is such a sweetheart. He’s weird, unfiltered, but just such a golden retriever who is obsessed with Forest and just wants him to want him the same way. I just adored him and his infectious energy.

And Forest can’t really control his wants and needs, but he tries so hard to control everything else. He doesn’t think he’s a good bet, and he feels inferior because of his messy life and financial situation, so he tries to put distance between them, but they somehow keep finding their way back...at least to the bedroom.

And Beck is just taking whatever scraps he can get and trying to keep a lid on his own real feelings. But once the lid comes off, there is no putting it back on. And they will not be able to hide behind their "rules" and will have to face their fears and real feelings.

I loved these two together. Beck is just so much fun and such a breath of fresh air that he just kind of lights up Forest and makes him feel like his old self again. He sees Forest and doesn’t care about money or messiness, and he’s understanding even about his limited time. But Forest has such fears, self-worth and trust issues, and he is such a good guy who doesn’t want to be the one to drag Beck down as things are going better for him, so he’s kind of self-sacrificing too. Beck just wants to be chosen, and he is also undergoing changes in his own life that are both exciting and adding new pressures.

I have loved this series, and this one is no exception. I was really invested in these two trying to figure it all out and begin to realize what they really wanted and needed. It brings back some of the team and the recent couples from the series, and they have their roles in this one. It's an age-gap, virgin, single dad, fling-to-more, grumpy-sunshine, opposites-attract, hockey player and bartender romance with fun, fire, and feels.

Becker James is barely hanging on to his hockey career after having been a top draft pick. He loves playing hockey, but he hasn’t had much ice time of late. Though he gets along with his team, he worries about what they will think if and when they find out he is gay, but it doesn’t stop him from giving his all to his focus on the ice.

Seth Forrester juggles owning a bar with his best friend while co-parenting his son with his ex. Those two things don’t leave much time for anything else, though he doesn’t lament missing out on dating after a hookup took advantage of him and left him with a much lighter savings account. Pulling himself out of the financial hole, as well as the emotional one, has taken a toll on his interest in letting anyone new into his life. He is grumpy, stressed about all his responsibilities, and doesn’t take time for fun outside of his rec-league hockey games.

Beck spends time at Forest’s bar and finally works up the courage to proposition Forest in trade for helping out Forest’s beer league hockey team. I loved the slight mystery (to the characters) about Beck’s hockey ability. These opening scenes built a lot of the background that the beginning plot points would focus on. There were times that I grew frustrated with Forest’s sheer determination to hold on to the effects of his last hookup, even beyond the point that one could call what he and Beck had a hookup, but it also fit his dedication to the grumpy side of his persona.

I absolutely loved Becker! He is such a goofy cinnamon roll of a character. He is awkward and a little on the shy side, but he has the best sense of humor and never shies away from a good laugh. My love for Beck made up for the frustration I felt towards Forest. I also loved the connection that developed between Beck and Forest’s son, Charlie. They connected in a way that was wholesome and fun. Their connection, based on video games and relatable homework tips, made it harder for Forest to keep Beck at arm’s length, and also helped heal some of the baggage Forest was carrying.

The second half had me loving both characters as they actively worked to build a better relationship. And the final few chapters were *chef's kiss*. I love the way Sarina writes MM and hockey. The hockey is important, but the connection between the characters by the end is relatable and realistic. This was a fun continuation of the Hockey Guys series, and some previous favorite characters play side roles here. I enjoyed watching how this book connected with the others in the series.

Teddy Hamilton and Brandon Francis brought these characters to life. The audio added another level of fun to the interactions between Beck and Forest. Getting used to the voices each narrator used for the opposite character took a little bit of getting used to, but the different tonalities did help track who’s POV the chapter was coming from.

A not-so-meet-cute with their dogs gets them both a bit annoyed. But their second meeting brings surprises and shared goals.

Skylar wants to project a badass babe professional image, but she sometimes is really a bit chaotic, impulsive, and spirited. She is just trying to get her solo woman design firm going and enjoys podcasting with her friends. Ford likes order, routines, control, low risk, and strives to meet his goals. And has met most of his hockey goals and needs to focus on his last season.

Now they are working together and starting to enjoy each other's company. But it is only supposed to be a business relationship, and it has the neighbor complication too. At first, they seem like opposites, but there are more similarities than they expected.

From peeping neighbors to a working relationship to friends with benefits, these two start to become a bit obsessed with each other. But due to circumstances and their past relationships and trust issues, they both worry about complications and getting hurt.

These two kept me engaged and smiling throughout. They have fun and snarky banter and thrive on teasing. They have both been burned by love and have trust issues. As they end up in a reverse fake dating situation, they try hard to lean into the fake portion and physical aspect and avoid the scary idea of anything real.

I absolutely adored these two. They have such a snappy, flirty rapport, but they’re also really thoughtful and caring. They’re the best doggie parents and just love their little dogs like children. Both had trust issues and had been burned by love. They thought they might not be ready for something real, but it just kind of sneaks up on them in this safe way of exploration. The more time they spend together, the closer and more vulnerable they become.

But as with all fears and issues, it just takes a trigger to bring self-doubt. So even though this book is mostly fun and light, there is enough conflict and emotional depth to it. Ford wasn’t perfect and he made mistakes, but he more than redeemed himself and was such a lovable hero. And I loved that Skyler could be messy and a bit chaotic and carefree, but then she could also be professional and competent And she has enough self-worth to know what she deserves now.

Together they were just delightful, witty, passionate, and just what the other needed when they didn’t expect it. This book had me laughing, smiling, hurting, and all in my feels. It’s a neighbors-to-lovers, opposites-attract, spin on fake dating romance with a hockey player and a designer who just can’t seem to stay away from each other. I totally fell in love with these characters. I enjoyed the side characters of their families and friends. And it did bring back many of the characters from the series, but it can be read as a total standalone. Even the animals had big personalities.

Ford and Skylar begin as neighbors sneaking peaks at each other and quickly learn that Ford is a potential client of Skylar's. The heat ramps up as they watch the neighborly movement and maneuver accidental bump-ins with the other. When they discover the connection they hit the brakes for a time. Until the necessity of a fake date strikes.

I loved watching these two banter and flirt as the chemistry sparked between them. They have so many silly, quirky moments, but as the story builds they also develop a deep understanding of each other. I love a good fake dating story, especially when it happens to a couple that everyone else can see the sparks flying both ways. When it goes from one fake date to another and spending more time together, wondering if they could have something more, they were bound to start to develop real feelings instead of fake ones!

This was another fun trip into Lauren Blakely’s hockey world. The hockey is light but the heat is high! This is not a hockey heavy story, but it is present and a big part of Ford’s identity. Skylar is quirky and eco-conscious in all she does. The elements we are used to seeing in Lauren’s story are present here in the most fun ways: quirky heroines, witty banter, hilarious phrases, and adorable animals. There is plenty of tension to work through even though it was mostly a light, easy read.
