Evie and Leo met in foster care as children and formed a bond of friendship. As they grew, their bond turned to love, and they vowed to make a life together when they turned 18 and were no longer a part of the system.

When Leo unexpectedly gets adopted as a teen and he moves to another city, he promises Evie that he will contact her as soon as he gets there and come back for her in a few short years. She never hears from him again.

Now eight years later, in spite of the odds, Evie has made a life for herself. She has a job. She has friends. She's content. Then a man shows up out of the blue, claiming that her long lost love, Leo, sent him to check up on her. The attraction between them is undeniable. But, should she trust this sexy stranger? Or is he keeping a secret about what his connection to Leo is really all about and why Leo disappeared all those years ago?

"Why are you looking at me?"

"Because I like your face..."

This is a beautiful story of love, loss, redemption, and second chances at happiness. At ages 14 and 15, Evie and Leo were as close as they could be. They were foster kids who met in the system and truly became each other's confidantes, protectors, and soul mates. Their relationship told in flashbacks were poignant and sweet. Their connection and love was undeniable.

“I’m going to kiss you now, Evie, and when I do, it’s going to mean that you’re mine. I don’t care how far away we are from each other. You. Are. Mine. I’ll wait for you. And I want you to wait for me. Promise me…”
But  they are separated by distance. They vowed to keep in contact and made future plans, but  she does not hear from him again. It is a devastating loss for Evie.

Flash to eight years later. Evie has made her own way as best she can. She is a sassy, tough, independent woman but she has a tragic history and vulnerable side. Despite the fact she has led a hard life, she is positive, cheerful, and sweet. She is proud of what she has accomplished on her own.

A mysterious stranger appears claiming Leo sent him to check on her. Jake is sexy, flirty, and fun to be around. They have an immediate spark and connection. He moves in quickly and begins trying to build a relationship. He is  wealthy, charming, a little bossy, but has secrets. He keeps messing things up, but Evie has such a big heart and propensity to forgive. I have to say at first I had a hard time fully giving my heart to Jake because I was so in love with Leo from the flashbacks. But Jake was wonderful for Evie too. And I kept wondering what was really going on. I had an idea, but also had so many questions and  some things did not mesh with my theory. So I was dying to get to the part where we figure out what is really going on with Jake.

Evie is not really sure how to take Jake. She is not sure why he is really interested in her and being in real a relationship is new to her. But Jake leads her into one full steam ahead.

"Evie...What I mean is, when I f**k you, you're going to be mine. Is that clear enough for you?"

The sparks between us are practically tangible. I have never felt this kind of physical heat and longing for another person. Not ever.

Together they are fun, have an easy going rapport, hot sexual chemistry, and obvious affection. Their relationship moves quickly and intensely, Evie is challenged to move outside her safe little comfort zone. Jake is intense, supportive, and possessive of her. There are some complications, lies and betrayals. But for some reason she keeps forgiving him and returning to a point of trusting him.

"You told me you were mine, Evie. This is not some fun f**k. This is not casual to me. I thought I had conveyed that to you."
"Boyfriend, man, lover, whatever label you like, you can use it, but what it means is that we take care of each other in and out of the bedroom..."

But when his past is finally revealed and all of the secrets and lies are out, will it be too much for her to handle?

This book had an interesting, original story line. Mia's style was easy to read, but could still engage you and pull emotions out of you. There was humor, tragedy, heart break, sweet moments, and redemption. I swooned, teared up, laughed and smiled a lot. I loved the characters and felt all of their emotions good or bad.  I loved the direction the story took and how it was resolved. But I was clutching my kindle wanting to move faster to get to the full story and to see if my theory was right (it was,  but I did not figure out some of the other secrets). I liked that questions I had, were actually relevant and answered closer to the end. It was a really unique and enjoyable read. This book was told in Evie's POV in present time and italicized flashbacks except for the epilogue. I love a great epilogue!  Leo's Chance is the 2nd book in this series and will be in his alternative point of view.

Thanks to Mia Sheridan for providing me a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
