Growing up in small town Wisconsin, Carly Turner couldn't wait to escape when she graduated high school. Now, she's living the life in New York City, even if she isn't seeing her name in lights like she used to dream about at night. She's living paycheck-to-paycheck, working behind the scenes in small theaters off Broadway. When there's an equipment malfunction the week before opening night, Carly makes a call that winds up changing everything.

Life in the city isn't all it's cracked up to be. While she feels like she's getting closer to making the move from behind the scenes to center stage, she misses being surrounded by people who understand the quirks that come from living in a town of five thousand people. That, and the fact that he's sexy as sin, make Adam everything she feels like she's missing.

The only problem? He's her best friend's kid brother...

Adam Sanders wants to settle down, find a good woman and start a family like he sees so many of his friends doing. But how is he supposed to meet Ms. Right when he's constantly on the road for work? When he's sent to New York to handle a repair that would typically be contracted out as a favor to his boss, he's just about to his breaking point.

Everything changes when the stagehand sent to open the theater for him is none other than his big sister's childhood friend. The same girl he lusted after as a teenager. Could this be fate's way of showing him that he was looking in the wrong place for love?

As Adam and Carly's friendship develops, lines will be crossed and rules will be broken. Will they be able to come out the other side without destroying everything they had back in Brooklyn?

Kim's 4 star review
If there’s one thing Julia Wilson has learned in life, it’s that you can’t push your own dreams to the background for anyone. Newly divorced, Julia returns to the hometown she once swore would never see her again. Her plan is simple; enjoy the cheap rent her friend is offering and stay just long enough to develop a plan to make her own dreams come true.

It doesn’t take long before Julia realizes she’s made a big mistake.

Micah Anderson came closer to breaking Julia than anyone else ever had. After promising her forever, he broke her heart the week before she left for college. Now, Julia’s back in town and he’s going to have to tell her the truth about why he left her. It’s not possible to hide a twelve year old child when you live in a town of 5,000 people.

Is following your dreams worth it if it means giving up on a second chance with her first love? Is trying to make a relationship work worth it if his past becomes a threat to her safety?

Deleted Scene from Breaking the Rules:
“Carly, why don’t you go help Adam?” Micah yelled across the backyard. It had been a long day trying to keep Julia’s mind off Micah’s crazy ex and Carly was looking forward to a little downtime. If it wouldn’t have raised some eyebrows, she could have kissed Micah for giving her the perfect excuse to disappear with Adam.
More than once, Carly had thought about telling Adam she changed her mind and wanted to let everyone know they were together. She still worried about how Julia would handle the news, but it was harder than she expected it to be to keep her hands to herself.
As soon as they were around the corner, Adam pulled the car to the side of the road. “I’ve been dying to do this all day,” he said in that deep voice that melted Carly’s insides.
He leaned over, cupping Carly’s face in his broad hand. Their kiss wasn’t hurried, it was slow and passionate, as if they had nowhere to be for hours. Carly felt his hand drift down her body, eventually stopping at her waist. When he pulled her closer to him, she pulled away.
“Adam, it’s the middle of the day,” she sighed. She didn’t want to stop but they were far too old to be making out on the side of the road in broad daylight.

“I know,” Adam laughed, pulling her back to him, trailing kisses along her neck. “That’s what makes it fun.”
If there isn’t some sort of rule about annoying kid brothers growing up to be walking, talking sex, there should be.

This story takes place during the same time period as Bent, but it is from Carly and Adam's point of view. Carly is Julia's long time friend and Adam is Julia's younger brother. So we still have the drama from some of the events that occurred in Bent but from a different perspective. And we get the more detailed story of Carly and Adam.

Julia and Carly had lost touch over the years, but now that Julia is back in their hometown of  Brooklyn, they begin talking again. And Adam and Carly run into each other in New York where Carly now lives and Adam travels for business. Their friendship is rekindled and quickly turns into something more despite the fact they are not sure what they were really getting into.

Carly and Adam are really a sweet couple. They are flirty, playful, sexy, and truly care about one another. But lack of time together, logistics, insecurities, fear of upsetting Julia and an unknown future get in their way. They struggle to make it work, but sometimes there is just too much in the way.

Carly has trust and abandonment issues stemming for her childhood that significantly affect her approach on relationships. She is guarded, stubborn, independent, and insecure. She lives in New York although her life there is far from glamorous or perfect. She drove me crazy at times with her pushing Adam away, refusing to tell anyone about them, and just being fearful.

Carly never let herself form emotional attachments with anyone. When you allowed yourself to form those bonds, you were setting yourself up to feel the pain of a broken heart.

Adam is younger, but actually more mature. He lives in Brooklyn, WI. He is successful, determined, sexy, and protective. He has had a crush on her since he was a kid and knows what he wants. But he has trouble making Carly understand. And he can only take so much and be so patient.

In some ways, he's waited his whole life to have these moments with Carly. She'd never know it, but she was the first person he ever thought about spending the rest of his life with back when he was young and foolish.

So will they ever figure out if it is worth fighting for and somehow be able to merge their lives into one?

"If we do this, there's no turning back..."

This book was not quite as dramatic and suspenseful as Bent. But it did have relationship drama and issues. I enjoyed being back with the characters from Brooklyn, Wisconsin: Julia, Micah, Caleb, Gran, Annie, as well as getting in deeper into Carly and Adam's relationship. This is a tight group that have dealt with a lot but come out okay as long as they have each other as support. The characters in this series definitely have flaws and make mistakes, but that makes them more real and engaging.

Thanks to HB Heinzer for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review

With the exception of three years spent in the middle of Nebraska, H.B. Heinzer has called southern Wisconsin home. During that time in Nebraska, she imagined one of her favorite authors living on the far western edge of the county, just south of the highway. At the time, becoming a novelist was a distant dream for her. Now, she is the author living in that location. Ironically, she later found out that same favorite author lives just outside the town HB lived in for the first eighteen years of her life.
Now, HB lives in the middle of nowhere but still close enough to the city to not feel isolated. It's the perfect place to let her two kids run and explore their huge yard, teach them about the food chain as they prepare their first-ever garden and debate building a chicken coop. It's one of those dreams that is only possible thanks to the amazing opportunities that have come through writing.
