Maxon Chambers has a way of stealing all the attention.
All my affection, and all my dreams.
What I needed to remember was he’d stolen my good judgment and my virginity, too.

When he broke up with me, I ran across the country and swore I’d never return to Broadshire Rim.
But here I am, thirteen years later.

Maxon is all grown up.
Sexier than sin and more tempting than ever.
A detective on the Charleston force, he lives on the outside of safety, devoted to protecting the people of his city.
But with the way he’s looking at me now? I’m pretty sure what needs protecting is my heart.

Can we mend the pieces of us? Or will he leave my heart shattered forever . . .

The Dragon and his Little Bird

Oh my goodness...Mack! He was not what I was expecting. I always just thought of him as the loyal, good guy and cop helping his friends, and that there were maybe a few past mistakes. I had no idea that under that tough exterior he is also struggling with his own demons, lack of self worth, loss, and hopelessness.

He has seen his two best friends find love and settle down. But he is living his life status quo until he is surprised by the return of Izzy Lane. We learn the story of their past from childhood to teens and the devastation left in its wake. And Mack learns some news that he never saw coming.

This man is full of guilt, regret, pain, and has never believed he was worthy of her. But being around her again also brings back the want, the need, and the connection that these two always had. He pushed her away and broke them both due to a twisted sense of honor. But now he cannot help but be drawn back under her spell.

Izzy has been through her own struggles and is now happy to be home with the support of her parents(who I just loved). But facing her first love that shattered her heart is not easy, especially when she kept some secrets of her own.

So now thirteen years later, they are facing all of their past hurts...the choices, mistakes, betrayals, secrets, and their own feelings of regret, guilt, and self blame. There are hard truths and misunderstandings. There are choices that cannot be taken back, but have to be dealt with.

There is also danger and threats surrounding them adding suspense and fear. It was easier to do his dangerous job when he only had himself to worry about, but now he has something to lose. I swear I alternately wanted to smack and hug Mack. He was stubborn, self deprecating, impulsive, self sacrificing, and made some questionable choices. But in his own mind he was trying to do the right thing and be protective, but in reality it was based on fear. And his self hatred and self worth issues were embedded in him from childhood. But he could also be so sweet, supportive, and loving. There were so many scenes that just made me tear up.

I loved Izzy's strength and fight to do the best she could for those she cared about. She always believed in him in the past, even when he did not believe in himself, but now she has trust issues and is rightfully scared of being hurt again. I loved them together. Their intense connection was obvious from past to present. I felt their pain and their happiness. I saw their potential and was full of tension.

I loved getting more with Jace and Faith and Ian and Grace and the kiddos. I liked how her family treated Mack throughout the book despite the issues. This whole series has been about these three friends whose pasts had marked them so greatly that they had no hope and self worth. But these strong woman showed them how to love and heal and want to be better men. And their friendships have stood the test of time despite so much negativity and pain. Families come in all shapes and sizes, and these guys have built their own extended one. All of their stories were interesting, emotional, and unique, but this one was my favorite.

Izzy left Broadshire Rim and vowed to never return when Maxon Chambers broke her heart and shattered her world 13 years ago. But time and life have a way of changing plans, and when Izzy returns home after so long, it isn’t long until she’s faced with her heart break all over again.

Maxon Chambers grew up from the troubled kid he was back then. A detective now, he does his best to leave his past where it belongs. But when Izzy returns to Broadshire Rim, all those feelings he thought he put behind him come back in force.

These two have chemistry that has never been settled, a history that is unfinished. As they move forward in the present they have to face their past and face the issues that have kept them apart for so long.

I loved nearly every moment of this book. Izzy is a fighter, despite her run at their initial breakup and she has a lot to fight for in her life. Her determination to do things right and protect not only her heart but the people she loves shines bright.

The flashback scenes gives us a clear picture of Mack’s situation growing up, more than I thought possible based on who he is now and everything I thought I knew about him from when we met him in More of You and All of Me. Those flashbacks were probably the biggest heartbreak moments for me - bigger than when Mack and Izzy hash out what happened to cause their breakup.

Mack will do everything in his power to protect Izzy, even if it means keeping her at arms length. He never worried about his own protection until Izzy returned, but now he has something to focus on besides his career. And there is definitely something shaddy going on involving his job and a potential threat. He is protective, and has suppressed many of the emotions he felt about Izzy for so long that he has a lot of guilt to deal with on top of everything else.

Returning to the group of Mack’s friends was a homecoming and I loved seeing Ian and Jace settled in their lives and pushing Mack to follow his heart finally. Mistakes, second chances, heartbreak and hope, this book had everything!

His head rocked back and forth, his body shaking, shoulders pumping up and down.
“Izzy,” he murmured, so low, my name a needy groan.
“Maxon.” I shouldn’t have said it because it came out sounding like a plea.
“Little Bird,” he whispered, his lips featherlight where he painted the words along the length of my jaw.
A gasp left me on a breath as a riot of sensation erupted. Tingles streaked, gooseflesh rising in an undulating wave.
“So pretty,” he mumbled.
He exhaled a breath that became mine.
Our noses brushed.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.
Oh, God, what was he doin’?
Flames flickered beneath the bare caress. The man my fire, my cold body begging to come alive under his scorching touch.
I whimpered, sagging against the wall when he stroked his hands down my sides and slipped them under my dress, palms riding up the outside of my thighs.
Better question was what I was doing. But there was no reason. No sanity in the middle of this.
No logic where heartbreak and hope met.
“You are so fucking sexy.” His confession was a growl. Deep and dark. “Do you have any idea what it was like sitting across from you all night? What it was like waking up with you asleep in my chair? Like staring at the sun, knowing you’ll go blind if you look for too long, and knowing taking in that beauty for even a second would be worth it.”
He nudged forward, erasing the space between us, and his hands spread wider.
Desire raced. A flashflood of need that shivered across my flesh.
His mouth traced the shell of my ear. “Want to stare at you forever. Get lost. Take you. Possess you. How’s it possible you’re here, Little Bird? You came back to me. Feel like I’m dreaming.”
“It was you who didn’t want me.”
His hands tightened on my thighs, tugging me forward against his hard body, eyes pinned on me. “There’s never been a single day in my life when I didn’t want you. We are endless.”
