The Difference Between Somebody and Someone
Aly Martinez
Releasing January 27, 2022

The world owes you nothing.

It took losing the woman I loved and facing the paralyzing task of moving on without her for me to truly understand that.

Consumed by regret and razor-sharp memories, I’d resigned myself to a life of loneliness until a survivor from the same plane crash that took my fiancée stormed into my life.

Remi Grey was chaos and sunshine, fire and freedom. With her in my arms, I began to believe fate had other plans for me.

But as secrets of the past exploded around us, it seemed the only thing fated about our relationship was that I had been destined to lose her from the start.

The world owes you nothing. But for Remi, I would risk it all. No matter the cost.

Opening up an Aly Martinez book is guaranteed to pull you into a story immediately. This was no exception. I was completely enthralled and full of tension from the first page. Bowen is such an intense character and he immediately makes you feel all of his hard truths and deep emotions. It completely broke my heart in the beginning and all I could do is hope throughout the trilogy she’s going to fix it.

Bowen was already in the midst of emotional chaos when he suffered an even worse loss. Now he throws himself into work and just tries to make it through another day.

Remi is also a survivor. She and her best friend also have their own struggles and they are doing their best to move on.

Told in the present and time jumps back to the past it is easy to feel their emotions. Bowen has been self-isolating, broody, damaged, has literally been through hell over and over. Remi is more sarcastic, quirky, clutzy, and persistent. Their meetings are memorable, disconcerting, and eventually make him think…and even hope. It's as if she is a light to his darkness.

Is it chance or fate or another disaster waiting to happen?

This is an intricately woven, tragic, witty, passionate story of love, loss, heartbreak, and hope. There are so many layers to these characters and this story that unravel bit by bit. I found myself becoming so attached to them. Their connection is undeniable and their chemistry is fire.

But one thing I always expect from this author is some secret, twist, or surprise. And I have to say, she totally got me! I was left in complete shock and awe, and I cannot wait for more! This trilogy just might be the one that ruins me. I hope my heart can take it.

My favorite way to jump into an Aly Martinez book or series is blind. I knew nothing about the characters or the story before I opened the cover and for that I am so thankful. This was a story full of heartbreak, grief, and recovery, and is a great introduction to the characters I quickly fell in love with.

I loved Bowen from the very start. He was gruff and standoffish at first, but dealing with the aftereffects and his emotions after the crash as best he could. He feels intensely and was so certain he knew the direction of his life prior to the crash. Now he is holding on without the one he thought he’d spend his life with. His heartache had me immediately rooting for him to find happiness with Remi.

Remi took me a little longer to fall in love with, but was equally likable and easy to empathize with. I found her a little scattered at times, but it made it easier to love her because she wasn’t always focused on the challenges in her life.

These two just have a natural chemistry with each other. Though Bowen does his best to keep Remi at arms length he can’t help but let her in. They are meant to be, but watching the flashbacks as Bowen’s depth of feeling for his fiance is revealed makes his present experience all the more painful - it also explains his reticence to start something new.

The twist at the end is something Aly Martinez is famous for in her duets and trilogies, and this one doesn’t disappoint. I cannot wait to learn what will happen as this series continues and I can’t help but hope that everyone involved finds the resolution they need.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her husband and four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and olives. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
