There’s a lot I’ve never told my best friend. The fact that I love him. That I miss him every day he’s gone. That, sometimes, I ache for him with a ferocity that leaves me breathless.
Lucky Buchanan tore into my life as a boy, wild and daring, my opposite in every way. He drew me in, stole my heart without trying. He hears me, even though I rarely speak a word. But I always knew this place wouldn’t be enough for my free-spirited friend. I knew he wasn’t mine to keep.
So why, when I finally try to get over him, does he sweep back into town? Why is he upset? Why is there tension between us for the first time in years?
I never saw a future where Lucky could be mine. But now, unless I want to lose my friend, I might not have a choice but to tell the truth. My heart belongs to him. It has from the start.
If only I knew how to hold onto a creature that’s meant to fly.

This book grabbed me from the first page, and I was completely invested in Ellis and Lucky, as I watched them grow up, grow together, grow apart, and come together again in a whole different way.
This book brings all of the feels and had my heart in just suspended animation. Ellis is just this big, sweet, teddy bear of a man who is the strong and quiet type. He has his challenges, but he is kind, empathetic, loyal, creative, smart, caring, and completely devoted to those he cares about. Words just don’t always come easy to him. But from the time they were ten years old, Lucky could understand what he wasn’t saying. He could see into Ellis's heart and soul and they had this connection that tethered them together.
But Ellis is a small-town boy who is content in his home and watches out for his mom, and Lucky is an adventurous, adrenaline junkie who just wants to see the world and live life to his fullest. And since all Ellis wants is for Lucky to be happy, he’s willing to sacrifice his own needs to let his firefly fly away. But Lucky has always been anchored and connected to Ellis in a way that has a hold on his heart.
For years they grow and change and navigate their lives and their challenges. They are a bit oblivious to what is really under the surface and they’re so afraid that the other doesn’t feel the same way, so words go unsaid and feelings get hurt. Oh my heart, the pining! And oh my goodness, when the light starts dawning on these two it is just so emotional and beautiful. The tension and the emotions just kept ramping up. My heart just soared.
I completely fell for these two opposite but wonderful men and I was captivated and enthralled by their pure friendship, soul-deep bond, and epic love story. It spans over fifteen years and is inspiring, sweet, emotional, passionate, and just one of the most wonderful pairings I have ever read. Ellis and Lucky are just everything and I adored them both. But Ellis is just one of those characters that is so special and inspiring. He is the epitome of "still waters run deep". He is such a multifaceted man with so much going on under his quiet demeanor. And Lucky is vibrant, outgoing, understanding, and appreciates him for just who he is and hears everything he does not say. These two will stick in my heart and my mind and I hate to say goodbye. This is my favorite book by this author.
