From USA Today Bestselling Author Devney Perry comes a small town, second chance romance.
Gemma Lane built an empire. Not a small feat, considering her home as a teenager was a makeshift tent in a California junkyard. She’s dedicated her life to turning pennies into millions. She has power, fortune and prestige.
And she’s leaving it all behind.
Gemma is headed across the country in her best friend’s Cadillac when a detour in Montana reunites her with old acquaintances and a man who hasn’t changed. Easton Greer challenges her every word and tests her every limit because he doesn’t believe she’s really abandoned her riches. She ignores his snide remarks and muttered censure—until the day she’s ready to return to the wild highway, and Easton taunts her to stay.
She’ll prove to him she’s not just running back to her wealthy life, that she’s more than her money. She’ll unlock her guarded heart and hope that this time around, he’ll treasure the key.
Gemma Lane is changing her life. She has worked tirelessly for years to build a cosmetics empire and investment profile, but she still could not escape the pain and insecurities from her tragic youth. She and her friend, Londyn were part of a group of six runaways that lived in a junkyard and all had gone their separate ways except her and Londyn since they landed in Boston together. But now Londyn's life has changed for the better with new love and a new home, and it is kicking up Gemma's need to take a deeper look at her own empty existence. Gemma's fun and adventurous spirit has been stifled by work and commitments. So she takes off to visit Londyn, but then is encouraged to head out on her own towards California to deliver a car to another one of their friends. But as she begins to experience new freedom. she finds herself feeling the need for a much overdue detour.
Years ago Gemma and Londyn left another friend in Montana and it is time for amends to be made. But that also comes with the complication of running into the son of the ranch owners who Gemma also ran away from.
While the Greers and even her friend, Katherine welcome her back, one man is not so thrilled. Easton Greer is broody, angry, sarcastic, and frustrated. He is under a lot of pressure and tension at the ranch, and now the unforgettable girl from his past is back. He will do his best to be indifferent. He does not want to fall into her trap again where he might get invested and she takes off again.
But these two still have chemistry. They fight each other in an attempt to fight their feelings. They challenge and push each other. Before she knows it, she is conned into staying longer. But as they begin to just enjoy secret moments, open up, and be real, things are bound to get messy. Gemma is the girl so used to just existing, that she gets scared when she feels and goes into self-preservation mode. And she is the type to push people away or run to avoid the hard stuff. She still has abandonment and trust issues and feels not worthy. Vulnerability is hard for her. She never has felt safe, secure, and loved in a home.

But she won't ask to stay, and he won't beg her not to leave. They are both stubborn and sometimes cannot see what is right in front of them.
This is a sweet, sexy, heartfelt second-chance story about a lost girl searching for herself, acceptance, unconditional love, and a place that truly feels like home. I really liked Gemma's smart and snappy personality that hid a hurt, vulnerable girl underneath. Easton could be a grump and was easily frustrated, but he often just wanted to do right by everyone and it was hard to make everyone happy. But he was a charismatic, sexy, and swoon-worthy hero when it was all said and done.
I loved the Montana ranch setting and the Greer family. I enjoyed getting updates on Londyn and Brooks from Runaway Road. This also introduces her friend, Kat's story with his brother, Cash. Their story will continue in Quarter Miles and I am looking forward to more with them.
Gemma Lane is leaving behind her fast paced, business focused life in order to help deliver her friend’s Cadillac to California. From living in a junkyard, to running a multimillion dollar cosmetics company, Gemma has built her life from the ground up. But she’s taking some time to figure out what is next, and a stop in Montana to visit another old friend is a necessary part of this journey.
Easton Greer runs his family’s Montana ranch. With his father and grandfather still active in the day to day operations, he often feels like he is still taking[]\=er than the one running the place. When Gemma turns up, he is forced to face the feelings he buried when she left the ranch, besides, he doesn’t believe she’s really left the city behind.
First off, I loved Gemma. She was fierce in her determination to change her situation, though as a result she has made decisions that she regrets in hindsight -- not business decisions, but personal ones where she hurt those close to her in her determination to never return to her childhood. Her side-trip to Montana is an attempt to mend a bridge with one of her best friends, running into Easton gives her a chance to make amends with a second.
These two have chemistry! Easton is the one Greer who doesn’t seem excited to have Gemma back in their lives again, but it isn’t hatred, it’s hurt fueling his anger. Even with his anger between them, there is an energy that can’t be denied. Gemma means what she says, but she has to convince Easton that she isn’t going to run off again.
This was a sweet second chance, with a lot of soul searching and reconciliation. The Runaway world is not confined to one town, and as each member of the former runaway crew is introduced and developed, I can’t help but fall further in love with this nation-wide group of people. Kat’s story is next in Quarter Miles, and the teasers dropped throughout Wild Highway have me anticipating it’s arrival.

I opened the door, a smile still on my face, and collided, headfirst, with a wall of muscle.
“Oh, sorry.” I looked up and my heart stopped.
The smell of leather and aftershave filled my nose. I looked up to see a pair of dark brown eyes hooded by long, onyx lashes. I took in the straight nose, the sharp jaw and strong chin. My gaze dropped to the full lips I’d tasted once, on a night eleven years ago.
I’d never seen a face as symmetrical and so beautifully masculine as Easton Greer’s.
Even when he scowled, like he was now, it was a wonder.
He’d gotten even more handsome. How was that possible? He’d transformed from a young man to just a man, man. Rugged and rough and sexy.
“Gemma.” My name came out as a growl in his deep voice and I tore my gaze away from his mouth, taking a step back.
“Hi,” I breathed, the air heavy and thick.
He took a step away, then another, his glare unwavering.
Easton cast his scowl over his shoulder and spotted the Cadillac. “That yours?”
“Yes.”
“You’re staying here.” Not a question. An accusation. If he had it his way, I’d be uninvited.
I lifted my chin. “Yes, I came to see Katherine.”
His jaw ticked. “I thought we’d gotten rid of you years ago.”
Ouch. I guess he was still pissed about that whole sex in his room and waking up to find me gone.
But, good or bad, he hadn’t forgotten me.
One car. One cross-country road trip.
